City celebrates Emergency Preparedness and Ham Radio day – Mercer Island Reporter

Mercer Island Radio Operators (MIRO) will be participating in the annual ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Field Day over the weekend of June 23 to 24 at Luther Burbank Park.

Ham radio stations all over the U.S. and Canada will attempt to contact as many other stations as possible in the 24-hour period from 11 a.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday. The public is invited to come by and see the ham radio equipment, antenna arrays and operators who could be the last means of communication in a disaster situation.

In conjunction with Field Day, June 23, has been designated “Mercer Island Emergency Preparedness Day.” There will be lots of preparedness information (and giveaways) at Luther Burbank, compliments of the city of Mercer Island Emergency Preparedness program; and a city volunteer will be there to answer questions. Hours for the booth are 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
