Field Day 2018 for Amateur HAM Radio on June 23 – Manistee News – Manistee News Advocate (press release)

MANISTEE COUNTY — The Manistee County ARES/RACES Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service unit and the West Michigan Repeater Association, will participate in the ARRL Amateur Radio Field Day held annually in the U.S. and Canada.

This year’s event will be from 1 p.m. on June 23, to 1 p.m. on June 24, located at the Family Farm and Home parking lot on U.S. 31 in Manistee.

Field Day is an emergency communications response exercise and public education event that provides outreach to citizens in the community.

It allows the demonstration of emergency communications methods, public service agencies and citizens can use for disasters and emergencies.

“Our ARES/RACES unit not only provides excellent backup communications services at the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Operations Center, but they also have the ability to set up self-contained communications stations ‘off the grid’,” said Lt. Brian Gutwoski, EMC coordinator. “Their services allow all emergency services to keep in contact, which provides a valuable service to the whole community.”

The event will also provide training on the use of Amateur Radio Equipment to team members, amateur radio operators and citizens, by providing operational experience that may be required for a disaster and emergency response.

Key governmental officials, community leaders, amateur radio operators and citizens are invited to participate in this event, and learn more about it.

For more information, contact the Manistee County Emergency Management office at (231) 723-9970, or the Manistee ARES emergency coordinator Glenn Zaring KE8CFM at (231) 510-5283.
