VOA Museum Plans Rockin’ Fundraiser for Sept. 22

The event will also mark the 74th anniversary of the VOA-Bethany Station

The National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting has announced its 2018 fundraiser gala. “Rock the Radio” will be held Sept. 22 from 5:30–10:30 p.m. at the museum in West Chester, Ohio. The event will also mark the 74th anniversary of the VOA-Bethany Station.

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by Cincinnati-based band Blue Stone Ivory playing music from the Cold War era, and the event will also feature the opening of the museum’s new exhibit hall and a private viewing of a Cold War exhibit.

The Cold War exhibit is supported by the U.S. Coast Guard’s USS Courier alumni association. The Courier was stationed off the Greek coast from 1952–64 and hosted a Voice of America radio station tasked to defeat Soviet jamming, according to the museum.

The announcement quoted VOA Museum Board President Ken Rieser: “Here in the U.S., we remember radio as entertainment, but it was a crucial way the Voice of America communicated throughout World War II and the Cold War to our troops and allies overseas and to people who lived in countries without a free press. We want to recognize our nation’s commitment to tell the truth in media and educate people in countries where media is censored about what was going on in the world.”

Attendance costs $150 per person, and there are four sponsorship levels: Platinum ($10,000); Gold ($8,000); Silver ($5,000); and Bronze ($1,000).

According to VOA Museum Executive Director Jack Dominic, the proceeds will be used to renovate the museum’s first floor to make it “accessible to people of all abilities.”
