Nationwide radio play will promote new Queen movie

iHeartMedia says more than 650 radio stations and websites will simultaneously play the six-minute album version of Queen’s song, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” on Nov. 1 at 9 a.m. local time, in promotion of the opening movie, the Queen biopic of the same name.

“There’s an amazing moment in [the movie] ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ where the executive at EMI Records, Ray Foster, says that radio will never play ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ because it’s too long. He obviously was wrong,” iHeartMedia Chief Programming Officer Tom Poleman said in the press release announcing the “roadblock.”

The broadcaster says this “first ever nationwide song roadblock” is intended to promote the Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises film celebrating rock band Queen and leader singer and song composer Freddie Mercury, which will be released Nov. 2.

iHeart stations and websites will also promote the movie ahead of the roadblock, and the company has enlisted musicians to share a video tribute to the band, which can be viewed on YouTube.
