CQ NEWS (International News Column to Debut in April). Richard, W2VU,
Editor of CQ Amateur Radio, sent out the following [edited]:
"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 29, 2013

CQ Adds International News Column, Names AA6TS International Editor
(Hicksville, NY January 29, 2013) CQ magazine will be adding a
monthly international news column as of its April edition, magazine
editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today. It will be coordinated by
new International Editor Tom Smerk, AA6TS.
'A growing number of our readers and our fans on social media are
from outside the United States,' noted Moseson, 'particularly with the
addition of our digital edition, which eliminates the high cost of
international postage.'
'We'll be calling the column 'CQ World Wide,' ' Moseson continued,
and our goals will be to both better serve our international audience
and to bring more news of ham radio activities around the world to our
prime reader base in the U.S.'
Smerk lives in Dulzura, California and has been active in ham radio
off-and-on since 1988. For the past 25 years, he has taught business
information technology for the San Diego Community College District.
He is also a professional musician and formerly taught music as well.
Tom enjoys 2-meter communications to keep in touch with friends during
his commute to and from work; and after work, he can usually be found
on the HF bands enjoying both voice and digital communications. Tom has
written on various topics including business management, music and ham
radio. He is active in ARES®, SKYWARN®, RACES, California Disaster Corps
and CERT, and is a volunteer examiner as well. A committed lifelong
learner, Tom's greatest joy is helping new hams enjoy the hobby.
Hams with news of events and activities outside the United States are
urged to contact Tom at <aa6ts@cq-amateur-radio.com>."

D4, CAPE VERDE (Correction/Update). Mats, SM7GIB, will be active as
D44TIB from Cape Verde (AF-086) until February 7th (not between February
25th and March 8th). Activity will be holiday style using a K3 into a
wire vertical for 160-10 meters. Look for him to be on the radio in the
early mornings and evenings - on CW. QSL via his home callsign.

TRIATHLON THIS WEEKEND (Also See OPDX.1095). Just a reminder that the
"1st Triathlon DX Contest" will be held this weekend. A triathlon is a
multi sport event involving the completion of three continuous and
sequential endurance events. The word "triathlon" is of Greek origin
from t?e?? or trei (three) and a???? or athlos (contest). While many
variations of the sport exist, triathlon, in its ham form, involves the
three most popular modes RTTY, SSB and CW.
Triathletes compete for the biggest score in its Radio Amateur variation.
Amateurs around the world will try to be the Ironham (the winner in
original Triathlon called Ironman) and contact other amateurs in as
many countries as possible and as many Greeks amateurs as possible...

DXCC News - 2013 Pending Applications

Bill Moore, NC1L, ARRL Awards Branch Manager, reports:
"Each year at this time DXCC is busy finishing up applications from the previous year. I have been getting questions from hams asking about applications that were sent for 2013.

"Until DXCC completes applications for the 2012 calendar year, we cannot begin processing applications for 2013. Applicants can still submit their applications, but they need to be held pending completion of 2012.

"Normally, completion of the previous year happens on or by March 1 so
please use this date as a guide as to when DXCC begins processing the
2013 applications.
Note: This applies to all Digital and LoTW applications as well as for
paper carde submissions.

They will depart Reykjavik in early January 2013 and update their Web site with news of their DXpedition. The operation is to last for approximately six months from 20 DXCC entities in Africa.

Jon is in the process of obtaining licenses to operate from the following DXCC entities: CN2ZA, 5T0ZA, 6W/TF3ZA, 3XY0ZA, TU2ZA (pending), 9G0ZA, 5V7ZA, TY0ZA (pending), TJ0ZA (pending), TR0ZA (pending), TN0ZA (pending), 9Q0ZA (pending), 9J0ZA, Z2/TF3ZA, A20ZA and ZS/TF3ZA.

for operations on all bands and modes before contest.

CQ NEWS (Wayne Mills, N7NG, Named CQ DX Editor). Richard, W2VU, Editor
of CQ Amateur Radio, reported on January 22nd: "Renowned DXer, DXpeditioner
and contester Wayne Mills, N7NG, of Jackson, Wyoming, has been named CQ
magazine's DX Editor, magazine Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today.
Mills - a 1999 inductee into the CQ DX Hall of Fame - succeeds Carl Smith,
N4AA, who has stepped down after writing the magazine's DX column for 13
years.
Licensed in 1953 at age 11, Wayne began DXing in 1956 and went on his
first DXpedition in 1985. He was part of the ZA1A team that reintroduced
amateur radio to Albania in 1991, and the inaugural operation from the
newly-independent Republic of Kosovo in 2008. From 2000 to 2007, Wayne
was manager of the ARRL's Membership Services Department and worked on
developing the Logbook of the World electronic confirmation system. Wayne
also set several contesting records over the years, but says he considers
himself much more of a DXer than a contester.
'I am looking forward to working closely with Wayne,' said CQ Editor
Rich Moseson, W2VU, 'and to sharing with our readers his depth of knowledge
and first-hand experience with so many aspects of DXing. We at CQ also
thank Carl for his many contributions to the magazine and to all of
amateur radio over the past 13 years. We wish him all the best in the
future.'
'Following in Carl's footsteps will be difficult,' noted Mills, 'but
going forward as the new CQ DX column editor, I will attempt to discuss
items of current interest such as DXpedition funding, pileup behavior
and maybe the many aspects of remote control DXing.'
Mills will begin writing the CQ DX column as of the magazine's April
2013 issue."
ADDED NOTE FROM KB8NW: Your editor has known Carl Smith, N4AA, for
many years. Carl has always amazed me with all the hard work he put in
for the DX community (writing the "QRZ DX" bulletin, "The DX Magazine"
and the DX column for CQ Magazine). Where does he find the time?? I guess
he deserves this break. Thanks Carl for the many years as DX editor for
CQ Magazine.

D4, CAPE VERDE. Mats, SM7GIB, will be active as D44TIB from Cape Verde
(AF-086) between February 25th and March 8th. Activity will be holiday
style using a wire vertical on 160-10 meters. QSL via his home callsign.

DX ACROSS AFRICA. In January 2013, Jon, TF3ZA, and a team of 15 ad-
venturers will attempt to drive from Reykjavik, Iceland to Cape Town,
South Africa on a heavy duty ex-military 4×4 Bedford MK truck. Their
planned route through the African continent is approximately 20,000km,
and they estimate it will take them 6 months to reach Cape Town. They

DXCC NEWS (2013 Pending Applications). Bill Moore, NC1L, ARRL Awards
Branch Manager, reports: "Each year at this time DXCC is busy finishing
up applications from the previous year. I have been getting questions
from hams asking about applications that were sent for 2013.
Until DXCC completes applications for the 2012 calendar year, we cannot
begin processing applications for 2013. Applicants can still submit their
applications, but they need to be held pending completion of 2012.
Normally, completion of the previous year happens on or by March 1 so
please use this date as a guide as to when DXCC begins processing the
2013 applications.
Note: This applies to all Digital and LoTW applications as well as for
paper carde submissions.
