Cleveland City Council Approves Upcoming Sky Warn Class:

Local residents of Cleveland now have the opportunity to help engage in storm safety thanks to an upcoming Sky Warn class approved by Cleveland City Council on Jan. 23. Cecil Watt, Jr. of the Sam Houston Area Radio Klub (SHARK) made a presentation at city council with a request to waive the fees needed to rent the Cleveland Civic Center for the class "Sky Warn is free," he said. "Some gentlemen will come up and make a presentation. It's about an hour to an hour-and-a-half [class] and that includes a little test at the end to see if everybody was paying attention." Watt explained that because of the curvature of the Earth, people can't see small things happening in the distance. "Especially the tornadoes," said Watt. Watt says the class is meant to help show participants what storm anomalies look like so they can be reported to the National Weather Service. "They're the ones that really sponsor this group," said Watt. The SHARK club consists of amateur ham radio operators who often assist emergency services during storms. Watt is wanting to get students from organizations such as the JROTC and the FFA to come to the class.
