Current ham radio news
The keen and practiced eye of ARRL member Ben Kuo, AI6YR, helped to guide rescuers to a hiker stranded on a mountainside on April 12. Hiker Rene Compean, 45, had spent the night in a remote region of the Angeles National Forest after getting in a tough spot. After a concerned friend reported Compean missing on Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dispatched search-and-rescue (SAR) teams. Although amateur radio played no direct role in the rescue, Kuo cited his enthusiasm for technology and ham radio satellites and for Summits on the Air (SOTA) for helping him to develop the skills he needed to guide searchers to the most appropriate area.
“This is actually very applicable to being a SOTA activator — map, navigation skills,” Kuo told ARRL. “Also, understanding RF propagation was key to this. The SAR teams were searching the other side of the mountain, where there is no cell signal.” Kuo knew that from having hiked there before. As Kuo described it, Compean was found between four SOTA peaks.
SAR teams were deployed in the Mount Waterman area of the San Gabriel Mountains to find the hiker. According to the LA Sheriff’s Department, a low-flying helicopter team spotted him Tuesday afternoon between Triplet Rocks and the east bump of Twin Peaks in the San Gabriel Mountains, and he was airlifted to safety with no serious injuries. Kuo pointed the rescuers to the likely search area by matching satellite images with what Compean had transmitted over Twitter.
Kuo told the Los Angeles Times that he has an odd hobby of looking at photos and determining where they had been taken. He was able to employ his skill to determine the hiker’s likely location using the tiny photo the hiker posted on Twitter that shows his legs and the valley below. As the newspaper reported on April 15, “When [Kuo] saw the photo posted by the Sheriff’s Department, he set to work pulling publicly available satellite images and matching them to the vegetation and terrain below the hiker’s legs.”
Kuo’s eye was good. He sent authorities the GPS coordinates of the most likely area, and the rescue team found Compean less than a mile from that location.
As the LA Times reported, the area where Compean was located on steep slopes and very difficult to access, requiring advanced climbing skills. The Sheriff’s Department credited Kuo with saving them hours of fruitless searching. Kuo said this was the first time he’d been involved in a rescue like this one.

S5-S8, 0152 DJ talk over music, sounds like ``Yes, I Am Radio`` and
something about country, fake Russian accent. Other logs of it:
Big Badfish Al, Central Pennsylvania: ``I AM RADIO 6933.13 USB 0112
UTC 20 April 2021 « on: Today at 01:15 » SINPO: 24222 - heard mixing

the Fox News Channel relay as IDed before; 0220 S7-S9 but only equal

** CUBA. 13767 & 13633 approx., Apr 19 at 1356, weak spurblobs out of

** GERMANY [non]. 11850, April 19 at 2211, checking for RHC but it`s
absent, instead the Deutsche Welle IS! How forlorn, brothers seeking
brothers past 2224 with no response, let alone schwisters. VP signal
S3-S0 with flutter, but unmistakable. 11850 happens to be a DW
frequency for three daily broadcasts in Hausa, one ending at 1900, the
next not until 0630. One thing for sure, if it`s DW, it can`t be
transmitted from Germany`s last major SW site, Nauen; these are
scheduled via ISSoudun where maybe they forgot to turn it off 3+ hours
ago? Or QRX for latest flap about Euro football? Or maybe a very late
silly ball game after midnight, which seems to be the main purpose of
one of two languages remaining from DW on KW; the other? Amharic

** ITALY [and non]. 7290, Monday April 19 at 1758, I`m checking IRRS
via UTwente SDR to see how it`s doing in the timeslot from which WOR
was bumped to Saturday. Weak carrier seems to be on, but CNR is still
audible past 1802, when I conclude IRRS is not on at all. It does cut
on at *1807:26, after which the new program must have long begun. No
modulation audible until weakly at 1811:06, undermodulated talk. So
the startup situation at this secret site is worse than ever.
IRRS sked now shows for Monday 2000-2100 CET: ``EGR - Gospel4Grampian
Radio``, per its own website, outgrowth of a mere podcast. Grampian is
a region in NE Scotland around Aberdeen. Occupies the whole hour, so
Shortwave Report is also replaced. By 1833 recheck, modulation has
improved to readable, if one cared to.
Alfredo Cotroneo of IRRS assures me that the schedule has been fixed
so WOR will appear: Fri 2030 UT on 594+webcast; Sat 1801 on 7290, 594
and webcast; Sat 2334 on webcast only; and presumably still Sunday
2000 on 594+webcast as I confirmed April 18 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA. April 19 is the 36th anniversary of the domestic

Oklahoma City Bombing." [or read script with sound bites]
The bomb that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in
downtown Oklahoma City killed 168 people - including 19 children. It
injured hundreds more, and forever shaped the community.
April 19, 1995 started as an idyllic spring morning - clear skies,
calm winds - better than most Wednesdays during the state’s
usually-turbulent severe weather season. Nothing seemed out of the
ordinary. Workers showed up to their jobs, and went about their
regular routines. That all changed at 9:02 a.m...``

0259 ID as Drunken DJ Radio, asking for requests, and refers to
earlier Wolverine broadcast. Then ``8 Miles Hi`` by The Birds. BTW,
this has a much better signal than Area 51 on WBCQ, q.v. at USA, and
no RHC QRM! At 0307 I notice that switching to 6950-LSB, instead of
zero, I get residual audio, only the bass-line of the music, rather
than full fidelity on USB! Not sure if this be transmitter anomaly or
receiver, but with straight-up passband equally between LSB and USB,
and not noticed such on other SSB signals (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** SPAIN. 17855, Sat Apr 17 at 2023, REE is a JBA carrier to North
America amid G1 storming and K-index of 3. 15520 backwards manages

Not confirmed on IRRS 7290, supposed to be Sat Apr 17 at 1801: via
UTwente, as usual modulation cuts on late at 1800:26 with Feature
Story News, not just headlines, 1803:46 music not WOR and later a YL

Next IRRS broadcast scheduled for webcast only Saturday at 2330.

2400 as I am talking about WBCQ 13570/9330; back for a few words about
WHAM, then replaced by classical piano music fill. FYI: a 29:00 minute
program will not fit into a 26-minute slot: either let it run another
3 minutes, please, or ditch the news review before it.

** U S A. 6159.93, UT Sun April 18, Area 51 via WBCQ is only S7, even
tuned to LSB where the splash from 6165 RHC hits S9. Program just
ending is `Great Lakes Radio Conspiracy`. Checking this after pirate
on 6950-USB/LSB which has a *much* better signal, and NO QRM. At this
hour, there is NOTHING on 6155, 6150, 6145, or 6140. But since RHC
could jump to 6145 at will, the safest place for WBCQ would be 6155.
Unfortunately, US SW stations are not accustomed to addressing QRM
problems so rapidly, if ever (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 15825, Apr 17 at 1925, WWCR-1 is S9+ tnx to sporadic E,
reinforcing its squeal. Similar megameter-away 15610, WEWN is also S9,
both much better than normal. 13845 WWCR-3 is also boosted to S9+25,
the SSOB. Nothing much on 17 MHz except 17530 VOA, but I had just
heard hams in FL and VA JBA on 18140-USB. Can hardly wait for Es MUF
