Propagation de K7RA

29 March, 2013
ARLP013

Solar activity was down this week, with the average daily sunspot number less than half last week's figure, at 49.6. Average daily solar flux dropped 22 points to 97. Geomagnetic activity was quiet also.

The predicted solar flux is 95 and 100 on March 28-29, 105 on March 30-31, 110 on April 1-3, 115 on April 4, 120 on April 5-7, 125 on April 8-10, 120 on April 11-13, 115 on April 14, 110 on April 15, then it drops below 100 on April 20-24.

The predicted planetary A index is 22, 18 and 8 on March 28-30, 5 on March 31 through April 22, then 8, 18, 15 and 8 on April 23-26, and 5 through the end of April and into the first week in May.

Lee Gordy, W4KUT of Cartersville, Georgia wrote to say he just finished reading Carl Luetzelschwab's article "The Sun and the Ionosphere" in the March 2013 QST for the third time.

Lee wrote, "For me, It's consoling to know that knowledgeable professionals such as Carl Luetzelschwab are having exciting difficulties rounding up Ol' Sol's secrets. There's a fine and mystical line between prophesy and prognosis, and the even bigger consolation prize I've taken away from Luetzelschwab's informative writings is a closer understanding of songwriter Joni Mitchell's wonderful composition, 'Both Sides, Now' -- 'It's cloud illusions I recall, I really don't know clouds, at all.' I was there for Cycle 19. It was mystical and magical, and I have every hope that I'll experience a like ionospheric folly before I send my final SK. Who knows, maybe this cycle will have another peak, and we'll hear non-stop, worldwide 10 and 6 meter activity. In the meantime, it's fun to try and outguess Solar Mojo. It's a big part of the infectious excitement and thrill of amateur radio."

Lee added later, "Regarding the Sun, we can literally see 'both sides now.' And it just seems like the more we know about it, the less we really know!"

W4KUT must be referring to the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory project, or STEREO (http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/), which does allow us to observe both sides of the Sun, with real time images, too, updated every few minutes.

Bill Tynan, W3XO of Kerrville, Texas (in grid square EM00kd) wrote, "The CME of March 15 apparently caused a major North/South opening on 6 meters. Sunday, March 17 at 2122 UTC, I worked HC5VF. He was S-9 with 50 Watts. I did not hear any Central American stations, so my conclusion is that it was via F2, not multi-hop Es. I rule out TEP as HC is above the magnetic equator.

"Then beginning from 2154 to 2256 UT, I worked LUs 7YA, 9EHF, 1DA, 3EX and 7YS. I also heard but did not work, a CX.

"These could have, of course, been TEP, since they are south of the geomagnetic equator. But, since they followed so closely on the HC, it makes me wonder."

Bill has an interesting bio and description of his current station activities on his QRZ.com page, at http://www.qrz.com/db/W3XO.

You'll need to log in, but the account is free. His email signature says "700 watts to an 11 element M2 Yagi at 70 feet." I assume that is for 6 meters.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

3B7C - THE BOOK -
IN THE MIDDLE OF APRIL, Pete - SM5GMZ - releases another photo book. This
time it’s about the DX-pedition to Saint Brandon in 2007, where Pete was
one of the 20 operators who together managed to work 137, 500 QSOs during
an absolute sunspot minimum.
The book consists of a large number of images, all in full color. In texts,
Pete describes how it is to be on an uninhabited atoll in the middle of the
southern Indian Ocean, where nothing but amateur radio and satellite phones
work. He also tries to explain the joy of endless multi-layer pile-ups and
describes the enormous planning that comes with a DX-pedition of this
magnitude.
The book is photographed in the "documentary tradition", as Pete normally
works as a professional photojournalist. This means that many of the pictures
show the people involved in a somewhat different angle than many of you are
used to from ham radio magazines.
Pete and the publisher, Publicera Publishing Ltd, have decided to donate
10% of the sales of this photo book to ARRL’s youth activities and another
10% of the proceeds to Five Star Dxers Association (FSDXA), which since 1998
has been the moving force behind a number of extremely successful DX-peditions.
Finally, Pete and the publisher will also donate 10% of the sales to the German
High Speed Club, as one of the youngest operators from the 3B7C adventure,
Jens - DL7AKC, became a Silent Key in 2011. Jens was an excellent representative
for our fascinating hobby and an outstanding CW-operator.
TECHNICAL FACTS:
Standard Landscape format, 10 x 8 inch (25 x 20 cm)
Approx 90 pages | Large number of colour pictures
Printed in the US on Premium Paper No. 100 (148 GSM) | Matte finish

The first transatlantic radio contact between the Netherlands and the

this event and also OM Henk Jesse (SK 2001) until Mar 28 and from
August until November. Using the self-awarded callsign PCII, H.J. Jesse
then an 18-year old (!) schoolboy, made the first two-way transatlantic
amateur radio contact from the Netherlands in 1923 when he exchanged
messages with American station 2AGB. The QSO lasted over two hours and
was in CW. The output stage of Jesse's home-made transmitter comprised
three vacuum tubes (valves) in parallel and consumed 350 watts on a
wavelength of 113m. However when news of this leaked out he was
prosecuted and found guilty in 1925. He was then congratulated for his
engineering achievement and not sentenced. In 1983, 60 years after this
Henk J. Jesse received the call PA0CII to honour his achievement from
the Dutch Government. Henk was the only radio amateur in the Nether-
lands who received a call without taking a ham radio exam.

AMATEUR OF THE YEAR: Mustapha,DL1BDF, was recognized "Amateur of the Year"
at the Hamvention 2013 in Dayton/Ohio.

RUMOURS: There are efforts under way to nominate the amateur radio for the
Nobel Peace Prize. A good idea, because no other institution or group
has done more for the friendship between nations and thus to peace
across boundaries, ideologies and generations for over 100 years.
In how many cases a QSO was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with
international mutual visits and thus increasing understanding of
different cultures? In Germany the goal of international friendship is
written down in the Amateur Radio Act. Even during the Cold War there
were wireless connections between the USA and USSR every day and even
the exchange of QSL cards worked fine. Legendary are the relief efforts
of radio amateurs in natural disasters as well as responding to
emergency calls. A possible recipient of the award would be the
President of the IARU as a representative of the radio amateurs.
Nominations can be made by former Nobel laureates, heads of state and
professors of relevant disciplines.

DXCC RULE CHANGE: At the request of the Program and Services Committee (PSC)
the DX Awards Committee (DXAC) investigated the impact of an amendment
to the DXCC rules. The DXAC and the PSC have unanimously decided to
bring into force the following rule:
To meet the growing outrages of direct-QSLs to put to an end QSL-cards
sent via bureau will be credited for DXCC with the factor 1,04.
Intended side effect is a higher degree of organization of radio
amateurs in the respective national associations combined with a
strengthening of the IARU and the total of Amateur Radio.

DXCC: Following DXpedition has been accepted for DXCC credit: 9X0ZM

INTERNATIONAL DIG MEETING: The International DIG meeting 2013 is approaching
and 151 participants from ten countries announced to take part so far.
If you are interested and want to register as well check these links:

SILENT KEY: Shortly after returning from the DXpedition to Clipperton (TX5K)
the wellknown DXer Luis,XE1L, suffered a heart attack in San Diego
and died within minutes.
Our condolences and sympathy are with his family and friends.
We do not want to be sad that we lost him, but grateful that we could
get to know him as a radio friend. We will always keep him in memory.
