Complete n00b needs your help!

Hey all, I have no experience with RTLSDR, BUT I want to try something...

I'm part of a Paranormal Investigation group and we have an object that will consistently give us "hits" on multiple EMF devices at once, almost as if it's on command.

Now, I tend to be one of the more scientific people in the group, and need to see hard numbers and rule out EVERYTHING before I will say something is paranormal.

My question is: Is there a way to use a software defined radio to scan a huge frequency range and see if the "spikes" (usually 2-5 milligauss) are coming from some kind of RF interference? If I could get a frequency that is causing that EMF meter to spike we could try to rule it out.

Anyone got any ideas?
