Want to get a ham radio license? Here are classes for you – Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

Amateur radio (ham radio) license classes will be offered in Chino Hills starting July 10, with a second session starting Aug. 28.

Ham radio operators must be licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. Licensed ham radio operators can communicate with others even when there is no power or cell service.

The Chino Hills Auxiliary Radio Team offers the classes to introduce more people to the world of ham radio. Team members volunteer their time to provide emergency communications for the city of Chino Hills.

The six-week technician class and general class will meet 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays starting July 10, with testing administered Aug. 14. The next session meets 6-9 p.m. Aug. 28, with final testing Oct. 2.

Classes are at the Chino Hills Community Center, 14250 Peyton Drive.

Participants are required to purchase the course book — the American Radio Relay League Ham Radio License Manual for the technician class or the American Radio Relay League General Class License Manual — before the first class meeting. Each student will be charged $20 in advance, which includes the testing fee and instructor charge.

The technician class license is the entry-level license for ham radio operators. The technician course culminates with a 35-question test on radio theory, regulations and operating practices. A technician class license allows a ham radio operator to communicate locally, and most often, within North America.

The general class license grants some additional radio operating privileges and opens the door to worldwide communications. General class licensees must already hold a technician class license or have recently passed the Technician exam.

For information, email ChinoHillsHamTest@outlook.com and a member of the Chino Hills Auxiliary Radio Team will respond.
