Amateur radio operator Toph Jones, call sign KE8JIG, and his father Chris Jones, KE8JIH, attempt to make contact with other operators in the United States and Canada during the American Radio Relay League’s annual field day event on Saturday in Rittman. Silvercreek Amateur Radio Association (SARA) hosted the 24-hour on-air drill at the Rittman American Legion. The event allowed SARA to test its equipment under a simulated emergency situation in which there was no power. The group relied on batteries, solar power and generated power to operate their communication equipment.
