Starwaves Decoder (Source: DRM Newsletter)
Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Ed, who writes:
Hi Thomas,
This month’s DRM Newsletter from the Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium has announced that a chip has been developed and introduced to make DRM receiver manufacturing easier and cheaper. It’s to be made available soon in a module with a header connector for developers, radio manufacturers and radio experimenters. This might be the tipping point for the development of high-quality, low-cost multiband DRM-capable receivers!
(Source: DRM newsletter)
At the MBT conference, the Consortium representatives had a chance to update participants with the latest DRM developments across the world showing DRM in action and new receiver solutions.
On May 23, at the meeting, a new DRM module (W102) with integrated hard coded baseband decoder was launched by Starwaves. The module will be suitable for applications such as consumer radios or aftermarket automotive solutions. The module contains a high-quality tuner frontend and audio DAC as well as a digital input for external audio sources e.g. from an external MCU to provide Bluetooth or USB audio. It measures only 40x40mm and covers all bands from LW, MW, SW to the FM Band (64-108 MHz) in DRM and analogue radio. All data services such as Journaline or MOT Slide Shows can be extracted from the data stream for further processing in the target device. The module will be available for order in the 3rd quarter of 2019.

Meeting right after Dayton Hamvention® at the University of Dayton on May 20, the ARRL Board’s Executive Committee (EC) adopted a motion to establish an Ad Hoc Committee on Communications with ARRL Members. The panel would review ARRL communications with members and members’ perceptions to “consider areas needing enhancement, [and] ways in which such communications might be enhanced,” and it would “propose concrete changes in communication processes and methods by which improvements may be accomplished,” according to the resolution. ARRL Vice President Greg Widin, K0GW, will chair the committee.
In his remarks to the EC, President Rick Roderick, K5UR, said he’s been receiving positive feedback from members. He also reported receiving numerous questions regarding the Amateur Radio Parity Act. He stressed that ARRL needs to assure members that it has not given up on the initiative, which was put on hold earlier this year. At the same meeting, ARRL Pacific Division Director Jim Tiemstra, K6JAT, updated the EC on efforts to reassess the Amateur Radio Parity Act. He said the Board’s Legislative Committee is working on a plan of action to go before the full Board at its July meeting.
President Roderick, who chaired the EC meeting, said he remains concerned that Technician licensees, who make up more than half of the US Amateur Radio population, only comprise some 16% of ARRL members.
In his report, Washington Counsel David Siddall, K3ZJ, commented on several pending FCC issues. Regarding the ARRL’s Technician enhancement petition filed in 2018, Siddall advised the EC that if ARRL wished to amend the proposal, it should do so before the FCC drafts a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM).
The EC referred to the Administration and Finance (A&F) Committee for its consideration of a suggested graduated ARRL Life Membership dues reduction after an individual has reached a certain age. The EC asked the A&F Committee for recommendations to the full Board in January 2020.
The Executive Committee expressed its thanks and extended its compliments to the ARRL staff and volunteers for “their outstanding work at the just-completed National Convention as part of Dayton Hamvention 2019.”
The minutes of the May 20 Executive Committee meeting have been posted on the ARRL website.

The International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 Monitoring System (IARUMS) reports a “new kind” of over-the-horizon (OTH) radar on 20 meters. The intruding signal, which appears to be emanating from the Far East, was monitored during May on 14.140 – 14.150 MHz. Another Chinese wideband OTH radar has been showing up on 15 meters, with a signal 160 kHz wide. An Iranian radar has appeared on 10 meters, centered on 28.860 MHz, and is audible in Europe during sporadic-E conditions. The signal is about 46 kHz wide. The Russian OTH radar “Konteyner” OTH radar centered on 14.127 MHz continues to be observed, with a 12 kHz wide signal.
The so-called “Foghorn” OTH radar from China, first heard in 2017, and other OTH radars were spotted on several 20-meter frequencies. The Foghorn is a burst radar that has been heard on other bands, with the signal often jumping. The signal is frequency modulation on pulse (FMOP) with 66.66 sweeps-per-second bursts.
From the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) that emerged following the breakup of the Soviet Union, taxi traffic continues to appear on 10 meters, using FM. IARUMS said pirates in the Far East have been “abusing” 20 meters, transmitting on 14.000 MHz, using USB. IARUMS monitors also logged several fish net (driftnet) buoys between 28.000 and 28.500 MHz, transmitting a carrier followed by a CW identification. Codan selective callings (selcalls) believed to be in Oceania have been heard between 7.108 and 7.150 MHz

Kids Day is Saturday, June 15 — an opportunity to get youngsters on the air to share in the joy and fun that Amateur Radio has to offer.
Kids Day gets under way Saturday at 1800 UTC and concludes at 2359 UTC. Sponsored by the Boring (Oregon) Amateur Radio Club, this event has a simple exchange, suitable for younger operators: first name, age, location, and favorite color. After that, the contact can be as long or as short as each participant prefers.
Look for activity on these frequencies: 10 meters: 28.350 – 28.400 MHz; 12 meters: 24.960 – 24.980 MHz; 15 meters: 21.360 – 21.400 MHz; 17 meters: 18.140 – 18.145 MHz; 20 meters: 14.270 – 14.300 MHz; 40 meters: 7.270 – 7.290 MHz, and 80 meters: 3.740 – 3.940 MHz. Repeater contacts are okay with permission of the repeater owner.
As with any on-the-air activity that includes unlicensed individuals, control operators must observe third-party traffic restrictions when making DX contacts.
Additional details are on the ARRL website.

Product Dimensions and Weight

Product Length: 25.0000M
Product Widtg: 1.0280M
A 3 element LFA-Q (Super-rigid Quad-style) Super-Light Quad Style Yagi for 50-50.5MHz
The LFA-Q Packs a bigger punch than a traditional Yagi with MUCH MORE GAIN per metre of boom
If it is GAIN you want from a small boom, this is the antenna for you! Wow, Super compact boom!!
Checkout the TX Factor online review! http://m0scu.uk/tx-factor-episode-7/
Another impressive design from G0KSC, ‘The Quad has been InnovAted!’ A Quad-style antenna with full wave length loop elements which provide a number of benefits. First, if the elements are of reasonable thickness (as ours are, they are not wire!) then good bandwidth coverage can be achieved. Next, up to around 7 elements (1.5wl) much better gain per metre of boom can be achieved than would otherwise be possible from a traditional Yagi covering the same bandwidth. Finally, with the dual-boom structure and 1/2” diameter elements, the LFA-Q is extremely rigid and can stand up to some serious weather conditions!
IDEAL PORTABLE OR SOTA USE!
Despite it’s rigidity, the LFA-Q is extremely light weight and this means even in strong winds, snow and ice the LFA-Q will hold its own.
Our antennas are constructed with the best quality materials in order the best mechanical construction can be achieved, not the cheapest and most profitable! Even a digital caliper is used (with an accuracy of .01mm) to measure the elements during production to ensure they are within 0.2mm of what they should be, this ensures they work as well as our software model predicts.
  • Marine grade Stainless Steel Fittings
  • Original Stauff Insulation clamps
  • Mill finished boom and elements for highest levels of accuracy

Weight: 3kg/8lbs
Safe Wind Speed: 210Kph/130Mph
Turning Radius: 1.69m/5.77ft
Vertical Stacking: 2.75m
Customer comment on the LFA-Q:
”Very nice…assembled and installed over the last two days – even though it arrived over night!
Performs extremely well – It replaced a MET 144 8T (remember them) that was about 20 years old – the gamma match had become unstable – suspect the trombone dielectric has aged/decayed.
This antenna has great FB like the MET but I think gain is very comparable and bandwidth far, far superior.
Thanks for the great service
Martin VE7MM/G4EZG”
Specification
This antenna is made with a ½ inch (12.7mm) and 3/8 inch (9.525mm) diameter tube for the LFA-Q and the boom sections are 3/4” 19mm diameter. This antenna is not made cheaply, it is made to perform and to do so for many years with Marine Grade Stainless Steel fixings.
No figures are made up here as they are in some Ham Radio adverts, all performance figures are verified in the very latest software simulation packages with some antennas being professionally confirmed on an antenna range.
