3DA - The website for the 18-27 November 3DA0ET DXpedition to Swaziland
[425DXN 1159] is now up and runnig at www.swazidx.org. A survey
(link on the homepage at the top on the right) is being run asking
DXers some questions about where they need 3DA0ET the most. The
organizers are looking for more team members, and "would like to
have some great RTTY operators along". If interested please
contact Roger ZS6RJ (roger.jones[@]vodamail.com) or Frosty
(3da0cf[@]gmail.com).
4O - Look for 4O/YT4RA and 4O/YT7AW to be active from Montenegro on
6-15 August. Focusing on 30, 17 and 12 metres and digital modes,
they will operate from the Durmitor National Park, "followed by
seaside activity, with possible stopover on IOTA group EU-163".

4O - Jacek, SP5OXJ will be active holiday style as 4O/SP5OXJ from
Budva, Montenegro on 13-20 August. He will be QRV on 40-20 metres

9M2 - A team of ten operators from the Melaka DX Club will be active as
9M2MI from Undan Island (AS-097) and lighthouse on 16-18 August.
They will be QRV on 40, 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10 metres SSB and CW.

9M2 - Once again Rich, PA0RRS will be active as 9M2MRS from Penang
Island (AS-015) from 31 December until 23 February 2014. He will
operate CW, RTTY and PSK on 40-10 metres. QSL via home call,

9M6 - Dave, G4BUO will be active as 9M6/G4BUO from Gaya Island (OC-133)
on 4-6 August. He will operate CW only, "fitting in with holiday

CN - The Council of Europe Radio Amateur Club (CERAC) in partnership
with the Association Royale des Radio-Amateurs du Maroc (ARRAM)

DL - Ben, DL7BY will be active holiday style as SM6/DL7BY/p from Orust
Island (EU-043) on 4-16 August. QSL via home call, direct or

E5_sc - Fabio, IZ0YIV will be active holiday style as E51YIV from the
South Cook Islands in October. He will operate SSB and digital
modes mainly on 20, 17 and 15 metres from Rarotonga (OC-013, 9-13
October) and Aitutaki (OC-083, 13-17 October). QSL via home call,

F - Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the twinning between the Radio
Club de Neuville et du Haut Poitou (F5KFL) and the Amateur Radio
Club of Ronse/Renaix (ON4RSX), special event station TM20RSX will
be active on 10-17 August on all bands and modes. QSL via F5KFL

GM - GM8SRS/p is the callsign to be used from the Isle of Coll,
(EU-008) on 4-10 August [425DXN 1160]. Mike 2E0MPC, Andy M1LOL and
Ray M1REK will be active on 80-10 metres CW, SSB and digital

JD1_mt - Once again Take, JG8NQJ is active in his spare time as JG8NQJ/JD1
from Minami Torishima (OC-073) until mid-September. He operates CW
mainly on 17 metres, with some activity on 15, 12 and 10 metres.

ON - Kurt, ON4CB and others will be active on 80-10 metres as OR9W/p
from lighthisp "West-Hinder I" on 17-18 August for the
International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend. QSL via ON4CB. [TNX

OX - Bo, OZ1DJJ will be active again as OX3LX from Greenland in August.
According to the tentative schedule published on on his website
(http://geronne.dk/index.php/ox3lx/ox3lx-dxped), he plans to be QRV
from Kangerlussuaq (NA-018) on 4-5 August (HF bands and 6 metres)
and from Aasiaat Island (NA-134) on 5-9 August (HF bands and maybe
some 6m), while from around the 15th until the 23rd he plans to
plans to operate from either NA-018 (main island) and/or NA-243,
with a focus on 2m EME and MS. QSL via OZ1PIF.
OX - A group of YL operators (HL1KDW, JR3MVF, LA6RHA, SM6KAT and
WA0WOF) will be active as OX5YL from Kangerlussuaq (NA-018),
Greenland on 16-20 August. QSL via PA5YL, direct or bureau.

OZ - Dieter, DF2SD will be active holiday style as OZ/DF2SD from the
island of Fano (EU-125) on 17-30 August. He will operate RTTY on
30, 17 and 12 metres only (possibly with some SSB). QSL via home

P2 - JA1NLX, Akira, will be active as P29VNX from Lissenung Island,
Bismarck Archipelago (OC-008) on 8-13 September. He will operate
CW, RTTY and PSK31 on 30-10 metres. QSL via JA1NLX (direct only)
and LoTW. An OQRS for direct and bureau cards will be available at
Club Log (bureau cards will be sent through Global QSL). He has a

SM - Ric, DL2VFR will operate CW with some SSB as SD7V from Oland
Island (EU-037) on 10-23 August. Some activity during the
International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend is possible, most
likely from Tokenas Udde. QSL via DL2VFR, direct or bureau, plus

UA - Special event station UE80RWW will be active until 15 September to
commemorate the 80th anniversary of the beginning of broadcasting
in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad). QSL via R4AAS. Logsearch and

UA - Valery RG8K, Victor RW0BG and Igor UA9KDF will be active from
Zhuravlinyy Island (AS-109) on 5-11 August, using two callsigns:
RT9K/p (5-8 August, QSL via RX9KM) and R20RRC/8 (9-11 August, QSL
via RZ3EC). They plan to be QRV on 80-10 metres CW, SSB and
digital modes. Follow them on www.aprs.fi (search for ua9kdf-2

W - Members of the Old Barney ARC (www.obarc.org) will be operating as
N2OB from "Old Barney", the Barnegat Lighthouse on Long Beach
Island (NA-111) on 3 August from about 13 UTC to 21 UTC. Expect
main activity on 20 and 40 metres SSB, QSL via N2OB. [TNX The

AMSTERDAM 2014 ---> Since their last Press Release in early May, the FT5ZM
DXpedition team has made significant progress. They have begun receiving
supplies and equipment at their Atlanta staging area, the networking
framework for the two station sites has been completed, as well as the
plans for several low band receiving systems ("we will be hearing and being
heard very well from FT5ZM on the low bands"), and the "on island"
procedures are progressing well. As for fundraising, "at this time we are
about 2/3 of the way to our goal. Taking into account what we expect from
direct QSL requests and OQRS, we are about $75,000 short. This is of some

FOCUS75 ---> During the month of May 2013 the First Class CW Operators'
Club hosted a CW QSO Party, FOC75, to help celebrate the Club's 75th
Anniversary. Over 60 stations around the world signed with the *FOC prefix,
making over 200,000 CW QSOs and leading to over 1,600 applications for the
commemorative certificate. FOC publishes a quarterly magazine for its
members called "FOCUS", edited by Gabor, S57WJ. But this FOC75 event met
with such huge success that we have decided to publish an extra edition,
called "FOCUS75", which is available to all: just go to www.g4foc.org to
download it. You can also download a poster with pictures of some of the
operators who used the special *FOC calls. [TNX G3SXW]

IOTA NEWS ---> The following operations in the period June/July 2013 have
provided acceptable validation and are therefore approved for IOTA credit:
FO/UT6UD (OC-027 & OC-050), H44IND (OC-158), HQ8D (NA-223), HQ8S (NA-035),
K6VVA/KL7 (NA-152), T46C (NA-204), YB3MM/7 (OC-166) and YP13S (EU-183).

OO AWARD ---> The Belgian Amateur Radio Society (UBA) sponsors a
commemorative award for contacts made with ON stations using special prefix
OO from 21 July to 20 September 2013 [425DXN 1159]. Only OO callsigns with
2 or 3 letters in their suffix count towards this award. Belgian
amateurs/SWLs need 25 different stations with at least 5 different OO
prefixes, amateurs/SWLs in the rest of Europe need 15 different stations
with at least 3 different OO prefixes, amateurs/SWLs in the rest of the
world need 7 different stations with at least 2 different OO prefixes. The
award will be issued in electronic (PDF) format and it will be free of
charge. Log extracts should be mailed before the end of 2013 to the UBA
Award Manager, Egbert Hertsen ON4CAS (Egbert.hertsen[@]telenet.be). [TNX

SLOVAK QSL BUREAU ---> Effective 1 August, the Slovak Amateur Radio
Association's QSL Bureau has a new postal address: Slovensky Zvaz
Radioamaterov (SZR), P.O.Box 14, 900 31 Stupava, Slovakia. However, those
who use courier services must not use the POB, but send the cards direct to
the QSL Bureau Manager (OM3JW): Stefan Horecky, Mlynska 2, 900 31 Stupava,

THE END OF AN ERA ---> "The Voodoo Contest Group has taken part in CQ
World-Wide CW Contest from West Africa each November for the past 19 years,
operating in ten different countries. We have won the Multi-Operator
contest six times. Thirty different operators have participated over the
years, travelling from UK and USA.
In 2004 we published a book: 'Contesting in Africa: Multi-Multi on the
Equator' describing the first ten years. It is now time to update the
story. The timing of this is important because we have now come to the End
of an Era, so to speak: we will no longer return to West Africa to take our
large stock-pile of equipment out of storage for the 20th time. It has been
donated to the Liberian Amateur Radio Association.
The modern form of 'book' is a web-site - so we have developed one. The
group offers a huge vote of thanks to John Warburton G4IRN for investing so
much skill, time and energy into this project. The site comprises offerings
from many of the Contest group and tells, hopefully in detail but also in
an entertaining way, the story of these past 19 years.

YASME SUPPORTS DEVELOPER OF VIEWPROP ---> The Board of Directors of The
Yasme Foundation (www.yasme.org) is pleased to announce that it has made a
grant to support further development of ViewProp, a new utility for
propagation visualization developed by Rick Kiessig, ZL2HAM.
ViewProp (http://zl2ham.wikispaces.com/) integrates information from the
Reverse Beacon Network and worldwide spotting networks with station location
information from QRZ.com and mapping through DXAtlas. The result is a real-
time, worldwide view of amateur radio signals and operation. [TNX W6SZN]

+ SILENT KEYS + "The Voice of Pitcairn" that over the years gave many DXers
their first QSO with this DXCC Entity is no longer with us. Tom Christian,
VP6TC/VR6TC, MBE passed away on 7 July at 78 years of age. First licensed
in 1957, he was the President of the Pitcairn Island Amateur Radio
Association when Ducie Island became eligible for DXCC credit (November
2001) as a result of a favourable vote to accept PIARA as an International
Amateur Radio Union member-society. He also served for forty years on the
Pitcairn Island Council as the Governor's Representative.

The weekly averages of daily sunspot numbers and solar flux barely
changed at all compared to the previous week. Average daily sunspot
numbers went from 73.4 to 79.6, while average daily solar flux
decreased from 110.6 to 109.7.
The weak peak of this solar cycle continues. We are moving toward
the fall season, which is always seasonally better than summer for
HF propagation. Let's hope for a rise in solar activity to
complement the seasonal change.
The latest prediction from NOAA/USAF for the near term has solar
flux at 115 on August 2-3, 110 on August 4-6, then 115, 120 and 115
on August 7-9, 105 on August 10-12, 100 on August 13, 105 on August
14-18, 100 on August 19-24, and 125 on August 25. Flux values hit a
minimum around 100 on September 3-4, and rise to a peak of 135 on
September 11-12.
Expected planetary A index is 8, 12 and 8 on August 2-4, 5 on August
5-8, 8 on August 9-10, 5 on August 11-20, then 10, 15 and 10 on
August 21-23, 5 on August 24-26, 10 on August 27, 15 on August
28-31, 8 on September 1, and 5 after September 1.
Petr Kolman, OK1MGW presents a weekly geomagnetic prediction from
the Czech Propagation Interest Group. He predicts active to
disturbed conditions for today, August 2, quiet to active August 3,
quiet to unsettled August 4, mostly quiet August 5, quiet to
unsettled August 6-7, mostly quiet August 8-11, quiet August 12-13,
quiet to active August 14-15, quiet to unsettled August 16-18,
mostly quiet August 19-20, quiet to active August 21-22, and mostly
quiet August 23-24. Petr says that growth in the solar wind may
cause remarkable changes to the magnetosphere and ionosphere on
August 2-3 and 14-16.
NASA released their monthly solar cycle prediction, and there is no
change from last month. You can read it at
At the beginning of each month we take a look at the latest numbers
from our 3-month moving average of daily sunspot numbers. We do not
see any upward trend. We see two peaks, one toward the end of 2011
and another smaller peak this spring. In 2011, the 3 month periods
centered on October and November had average daily sunspot numbers
of 118.8 and 118.6. This spring the 3-month periods centered on
April and May had averages at 106.4 each. Could these be the
double-peaks of solar activity that some have predicted for this
sunspot cycle?
The 3-month moving averages of daily sunspot numbers centered on
January through June 2013 were 73.6, 80.7, 85.2, 106.4, 106.4, and
97.5. Just to clarify, the 3-month period centered on June includes
sunspot numbers for all of the 92 days from May 1 through July 31.
The sum is 8,970. Divide that total by 92, and the result is
exactly 97.5.
Jon Pollock, K0ZN of DeSoto, Kansas reported 17 meter observations
in last week's bulletin ARLP030, and this week has another report.
He wrote, "I won't keep reporting this, but I thought this was again
instructive since I am seeing this so frequently lately. On Friday,
July 26 I was up late and again decided to give 17 meters a try at
Midnight CST. Again 17 meters was very quiet, no signals at all.
i.e. 'Dead'. Except that I heard some weak thunderstorm crashes in
the background. My experience has been that often when you hear
that, the QRN source is a long way away. I called CQ about five
times (400 watts CW into a ground mounted vertical with a large
radial system) and VK7CW in Burnie, Tasmania came back (now about
12:15 AM CST) with a nice signal, about S-6. He was running 100
watts to a hexbeam. We ended up having a rag chew, and ours were
the only signals either one of us could hear on the band over a
9,380 mile path from Eastern Kansas. Again, 17 meters is more often
than not open when it seems dead, often for long haul contacts."

current solar cycle being the weakest in one-hundred years. It also

Sunspot numbers for July 25 through 31 were 71, 58, 64, 68, 97, 105,
and 94, with a mean of 79.6. 10.7 cm flux was 106.9, 109.5, 107.9,
109.4, 112.1, 113.1, and 108.7, with a mean of 109.7. Estimated
planetary A indices were 11, 14, 11, 7, 6, 6, and 5, with a mean of
8.6. Estimated mid-latitude A indices were 10, 23, 10, 8, 7, 6, and
5, with a mean of 9.9.

the special callsign W1T to activate Thacher Island (NA-148, USi MA001S, WLOTA

They also plan to activate both lighthouses on the island: Thacher Island South

The Council of Europe Radio Amateur Club (CERAC) in partnership with the
Association Royale des Radio Amateur du Maroc (ARRAM) will be active as from
August 19th, 2013 at 23H00 UTC with the special call 5C0CE to commemorate the
Revolution, the King and the People, (August 20th) and Youth celebration's day

PRESS RELEASE: FOC - FOCUS75 MAGAZINE
During the month of May 2013 the First Class CW Operators' Club hosted a CW
QSO Party, FOC75, to help celebrate the Club's 75th Anniversary. This turned
into a major CW fun event for the whole month. Over 60 stations around the world
signed with the *FOC prefix, making over 200,000 CW QSOs and leading to over
1,600 applications for our commemorative certificate - well beyond our wildest
dreams. This was a major tribute to Samuel Morse, Alfred Vail and to the Club's
motto: "A man should keep his friendship in constant repair" (Samuel Johnson,
1709-1789).
FOC publishes a quarterly magazine for its members called "FOCUS", a
high-quality magazine edited by Gabor, S57WJ. But this FOC75 event met with such
huge success that we have decided to publish an extra edition, called "FOCUS75".
FOC is pleased to share this special edition of our magazine with not only
members but also anyone who enjoys CW. Just go to http://www.g4foc.org/ to
down-load it. Read the whole story of this month-long celebration of Morse Code,
especially the operating experiences around the world, and see photos of those
who made it happen in a pull-out poster.
CW is alive and well and will remain so for at least the next 75 years - FOC
will see to that!

This week's bulletin was made possible with information provided by

LIBYA, 5A. Abubaker, DL1AL is now QRV as 5A1AL from Tripoli. He is
active on the HF bands plus 6 meters using CW, SSB and PSK. QSL to
home call.

GHANA, 9G. Jeff, W7JVN is QRV as 9G5AC while he and Beverly, WB7NLY
are here on missionary work. Activity is mainly on 20 and 15 meters
using SSB. QSL via K7JH.

MOZAMBIQUE, C9. John, ZS5J is QRV as C91J until August 3. Activity
is on 40, 20 and 15 meters. QSL via operator's instructions.

REUNION ISLAND, FR. A large group of operators will be QRV as TO1PS
from the volcano and UNESCO World Heritage site Piton de la
Fournaise on August 3 and 4. Activity will be on all bands and
modes. QSL via FR1GZ.

JERSEY, GJ. Operators ON8ZZ, ON8ZL and ON5NQ are QRV as MJ/OT9Z
until August 9. Activity is on the HF bands using CW, SSB, RTTY and
PSK with two stations. QSL via ON8ZL.
SARDINIA, IS0. Massimo, I0PNM is QRV as IM0/I0PNM from San Pietro
Island, IOTA EU-165, until August 20. Activity is on 20 to 10
meters using SSB, RTTY and PSK31. QSL direct to home call.

DOMINICA, J7. Gerry, WA6POZ is QRV as J79GF until August 7 from the
Northeast coast. Activity is on 20, 15 and 10 meters. This
includes a possible entry in the 10-10 International Summer SSB
contest. QSL to home call.

BULGARIA, LZ. Members of the Radio Club Blagovestnik are QRV using
special event call sign LZ1105PIO during August to commemorate Saint
Ioakim Osogovski. Activity is on all bands. QSL via LZ1KCP.

LEBANON, OD. Special event station OD5ARMY is QRV for three days in
recognition of the Lebanese Army. QSL via operators' instructions.

FAROE ISLANDS, OY. Ulf, DL3UB is QRV as OY/DL3UB until August 9.
Activity is holiday style on 30, 17 and 12 meters using CW. QSL to
home call.

GREECE, SV. Operators SV8GXQ and SV8JTP are QRV as SX8HOMER from
Chios Island, IOTA EU-049, until August 13. Activity is on the HF
bands using SSB and PSK. QSL direct to SV8GXQ.

EUROPEAN RUSSIA, UA. Special event station R863LC is QRV until
October to celebrate the 1150th anniversary of Smolensk. QSL via
R3LC.

NAMIBIA, V5. Sergey, UX0HX, Max, UZ1HZ and Alex, UT5UY are QRV as
V5/home calls until August 8. Activity is holiday style on 80 to 10
meters using CW and SSB. QSL all calls via UT5UY.

CANADA, VE. Members of the Radio Amateur Club of l'Estrie are QRV
as VC2CGJCS until August 17 for the XXIV Canada Games in Sherbrooke.

VENEZUELA, YV. Members of the Caracas DX Group are QRV as YW5X from
Orchila Island, IOTA SA-054, until August 31. QSL via DM4TI.

PRINCE EDWARD AND MARION ISLANDS, ZS8. Nadia, ZS8A plans to soon be
QRV from Marion Island. In addition, Carson, ZS8C and David, ZS8Z

THIS WEEKEND ON THE RADIO. The ARRL August UHF Contest, North

Sprint CW Ladder, TARA Grid Dip Shindig, 10-10 International Summer
SSB Contest, European HF Championship, The RSGB RoPoCo CW and the
SARL HF Phone Contest are all scheduled for this upcoming weekend.
