The visit will be done after the conclusion of the operations at Heard Island. It is not yet determined whether a radio operation will be authorized, and we are pursuing this possibility. [From Wikipedia] Kerguelen comprises a group of 300 islands and islets, with total area about the size of Puerto Rico. The climate is raw and chilly with frequent high winds throughout the year. The surrounding seas are generally rough and they remain ice-free year-round. There are no indigenous inhabitants, but France maintains a permanent presence of 45 to 100 scientists, engineers and researchers. NCDXF announces major grant to KH5 Palmyra Atoll DXpedition -- April 21, 2015 -- The Northern California DX Foundation is pleased to announce a contribution of $20,000 to the KH5 Palmyra Atoll DXpedition planned for January 2016. His amateur radio interests are DX, contesting and emergency communications. He enjoys building his amateur radio station, working new countries and serving the community. David's current station is an Icom 756 Pro III, Henry Amp., 4 element Steppir with a single 40 meter trombone element, 80 meter dipole, 160 meter series/shunt loaded 60 foot tower and various VHF/UHF equipment. JUAN DE NOVA 2016 ---> The organizers of FT4TA (Tromelin 2014) have "initiated a new project that has received the approval of the TAAF". Their destination is the island of Juan de Nova (AF-012) in March 2016. "The exact conditions and dates still need to be tweaked, but the main lines are already defined and validated", they say. "After taking into account all the constraints and imperatives, a team of 10 people has been allowed for a period of 15 days". KERGUELEN 2015 (KYFC) ---> The VK0EK DXpedition team has been granted permission to visit the Kerguelen Islands after the conclusion of the operations at Heard Island. "It is not yet determined whether a radio operation will be authorized", the team says, but "we are pursuing this possibility". Back in January [425DXN 1236] the team had expressed hopes for a 3-4 days activity. PALMYRA 2016 ---> Back in November 2014 [425DXN 1229] it was reported that The Nature Conservancy and the US Fish and Wildlife Service had developed a plan to accomodate amateur radio DXpeditions to Palmyra Atoll (OC-085), with 11-26 January 2016 as the first of two available spots next year. Last week K9CT and N2TU announced that "the Palmyra Island DXpedition Group has been awarded permission to activate Cooper Island in the Palmyra Atoll during January 2016". A team of twelve highly experienced operators and veterans of many DXpeditions (K0IR, K4UEE, K6MM, K9CT, K9NW, N2TU, N9TK, ND2T, W0GJ, W3OA, W8HC and WB9Z) plan to operate five stations over a 14 day period, 160 to 6 metres on all modes, using a callsign to be announced at a later date. Yes, 2,700 cards that you have sent me should NOT have been sent. It is quite clear that many people are confused by OQRS, Bureau and Direct QSLing, which leads to a huge problem of Bureau Usage Abuse. Let me see if I can make it clear for you so that we can reduce this abuse and reduce costs within the bureau system, and also reduce the wasted time that is spent on sorting bureau cards and processing them". Average daily solar flux increased from 132.5 to 150.4 over the same period. The day with the most geomagnetic activity was April 16, when the mid-latitude A index was 28, planetary A index was 43, and the high latitude college A index in Alaska was 57. These are high numbers! Predicted solar flux for the near term is 135 and 130 on April 24-25, 125 on April 26 through May 1, 130 on May 2-5, 135 and 140 on May 6-7, 145 on May 8-9, 140 on May 10, 135 on May 11-16 and then a jump to 150 on May 17-18 before declining to 125 on May 23. Predicted planetary A index is 8 and 12 on April 24-25, 8 on April 26-27, 10 on April 28, 8 on April 29 through May 2, 5 on May 3-5, 8 on May 6-8, 5 on May 9-11, then 8, 15, 20, 12, 8 and 12 on May 12-17, and 5 on May 18-19. From April 16-22 there was one new sunspot region appearing each day, except for April 21 when there were two. The forecasters pulled back on their estimates for higher solar flux. F.K. Janda, OK1HH sent his weekly geomagnetic prediction, and he sees quiet to active conditions April 24, active to disturbed April 25, quiet on April 26, quiet to active April 27, quiet to unsettled April 28, disturbed April 29, active to disturbed April 30 through May 1, quiet to active May 2, mostly quiet May 3-6, active to disturbed May 7-8, quiet to active May 9, mostly quiet May 10, quiet on May 11, active to disturbed May 12, disturbed May 13-14, quiet to active May 15, quiet to active May 16-18, and mostly quiet May 19-20. OK1HH says that increases in solar wind are mostly unpredictable, but he expects increases on April 24, May 3-5, May 15-18, and May 20. On Sunday, April 19 Jeff Hartley, N8II of Shepherdstown, West Virginia wrote: "The high solar wind essentially closed 15M and up for a couple of days late last week except for SA, back to near normal now. I easily worked HS0ZCW on 12M SSB today at 1517Z and a few loud southern EU. 10 never really opened to EU, but EA8DAZ was S9+20 dB." On April 23, Jon Jones, N0JK of Kansas wrote: "10 meters was good to the South Pacific the afternoon of April 23. FW5JJ was quite loud to the Midwest USA around 2200z on 28.029 MHz. I worked him with 50 watts while parked from my mobile. K index was 0. "Last Saturday April 18 there was strong early season sporadic-E on 6 meters. I worked W7GJ MT and KE8FD UT around 2145z on 50 MHz via Es. K7TNT WY had a 'pipeline' to CE2AWW for 2 hours. No copy on CE2AWW in KS. I had to work Saturday night shift, but saw many people spotted FK8CP via Es link to TEP that evening." Thanks, Jon. The Radio Officers Association ROARS will be running a month long event from the 1st - 31st May 2015 to commemorate the sinking of this vessel from the Planet Light Vessel currently berthed in Canning Dock Liverpool England. This once in life time event will be using the call sign GB100MFA, MFA being the call letters allocated to the Lusitania. The QTH of Liverpool was chosen as this was the Lusitania's registered port, and her final destination. Eleven of the twelve team members met at the International DX Convention, Visalia. We are pleased to make several significant announcements. On-Island Team: Invariably, scheduling a DX-pedition requires team members to make commitments which sometimes conflict with unforeseen business / family activities. Joining the team: - David Greenhut N6HD - An active DXer and contester, David first earned his Novice license call WN6ICK in 1974, he now holds an Amateur Extra license. His amateur radio interests are DX, contesting and emergency communications. He enjoys building his amateur radio station, working new countries and serving the community. David's current station is an Icom 756 Pro III, Henry Amp., 4 element Steppir with a single 40 meter trombone element, 80 meter dipole, 160 meter series/shunt loaded 60 foot tower and various VHF/UHF equipment. Previous DX operations include: 2013 T33A Banaba Island, 2012 NH8S Swains Island, 2011 4X/N6HD, and TG7/N6HD - KH6/N6HD. - Walt Wilson N6XG - Walt is an experienced DX-peditioner and contester. His most recent DX-pedition was TX5K Clipperton Island. He was licensed as a Novice in 1959 as WV6HUR. His introduction to radio was a 40M dipole, single tube oscillator/transmitter and an entry level Heath receiver. He subsequently upgraded to WA6HUR and in the 80s to the call of N6XG. He is a member of the Northern California Contest Club. Upon retirement he travelled and operated extensively throughout the world on vacation style DXpeditions. In 2001 he joined "Team Vertical" and has been on five Dxpeditions to 6Y and 2 DXpeditions to C6. Walt's current interests are contesting, physical fitness, travel, and business consulting. He lives in Los Altos Hills, CA with his wife - Alan Maenchen AD6E - First licensed in 1962 as WN6BID upgraded to General in 1963 and became WB6BID, was QRT for many years after high school. About 1980 regained interest in the hobby and bought a QRP rig, started chasing DX with 5W and a low dipole. Current station includes a K3, P3, Acom 2000, and another K3, TenTek Hercules II.
