Red River Radio Amateurs show off their Ham radios – WDAY

You could even see them from the interstate.

Just for Sunday, instead of going by Red River Radio Amateurs club, they’re using call letters.

“We’re operating with a generator, some people use solar power. So the idea is in case of an emergency we can hehlp out communicate around the country on emergency powers from remote locations,” says Kent Olson of the Red River Radio Amateurs.

They’re preparing for real natural disasters, on days where regular lines of communication stop working.

They also see it as a hobby.

“The club uses it more as just having fun, where we get to get on the radio and have fun with it,” says Olson.

As the equipment has evolves, so does the way people see HAM radio.

They tell me it’s believed to be a disappearing act, but Olson says this is far from the truth.

“It’s one of those things ham radio no long exists because of the internet and becuase of cellphones, ham radio is stronger than ever and as far as licensed operators -is growing,” says Olson.

They say now is a crucial time to recruit.

“It’s important to keep the HAM community new and refreshed with young blood,” says Bob Kirkeby of the Red River Radio Amateurs club.

It’s not something that requires a lot of work to do as a hobby –

They even let me try my hand at it.

“It can be as technical as you want it to be, amateur radio is whatever you want it to be,” says Olson.

By being out in the community they hope HAM radio will gain traction to fill the frequencies.

In their eyes, HAM radio isn’t going anywhere.

Red River Radio Amateurs will be teaching classes about HAM radio starting in August at the West Fargo Public Library.
