Amateur radio operators in Riverside County will participate in the American Radio Relay League’s Field Day from 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, through 11 a.m. Sunday, June 24.
During Field Day, amateur radio operators, known as hams, will set up field radio communication stations, get on the air and contact thousands of other operators in the United States and Canada.
Field station locations in Riverside County include Martha McLean Anza Narrows Regional Park, 5759 Jurupa Ave., Riverside; Winchester Valley-Wide Park, 32665 Haddock St., Winchester; and the Corona Police Station, 730 Public Safety Way, Corona.
Field Day is a way for the public to learn about ham radio and what amateur radio operators do to help in times of emergencies or disasters and it gives hams a chance to fine-tune and test emergency communication skills. They will use only generators, battery power and solar power and set up antennas in the field. The idea is to put together self-sufficient, working stations quickly and begin making contacts using no electricity. Hams use their own equipment and all service is volunteered.
Trained amateur radio operators have been effective in establishing emergency communications nets during floods, fires, earthquakes and other major disasters, including the events of Sept. 11, 2001, according to a press release from the Riverside County Amateur Radio Association.
The amateur radio operators participating in Field Day are members of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service and have voluntarily worked for a variety of public organizations providing disaster services, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, state and local emergency management agencies and the National Weather Service Skywarn Program.
Field Day is a trial run for emergency communication skills used during disaster situations. During Field Day the public can see all amateur radio communication modes in action, including voice, Morse code and satellite.
