Gearhart hosts ham radio field day – Daily Astorian

Amateur Radio “Field Day” June 23 – 24 demonstration, science, skill, and service – Star Local Media

Members of the Ham Association of Mesquite, a local Amateur Radio group, will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, June 23 – 24 at 215 Holley Park Dr. Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations open to the public to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio.  The event is open to the public.

Amateur Radio operators provide a critical public service for our community; during times of disaster, we are able to provide reliable communications when normal infrastructure is offline. Licensed by the Federal Communications Commission and trained in the art and science of radio communications and basic electronics theory, operators own and maintain their own communication equipment and are prohibited by federal law from receiving payment for their services. ARRL, the national organization, has built relationships with several served agencies including FEMA, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and many others. In Mesquite, they work with the Mesquite Office of Emergency Management team to provide local support and with the Dallas County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service.

The public service is easily extended during non-emergency civic events, such as Mesquite Rodeo parade, Mesquite Rotary Club Rodeo Road Rally and the Technicolor 5K benefiting MISD.

The public is invited to come out and see what ham radio and emergency communication support is about, become educated, and maybe decide to take the next step and become a licensed ‘Ham.’

Field Day location this year is 215 Holley Park Dr. in Mesquite.

Amateur Radio “Field Day” June 23 and 24 Demonstrates Science … – Southern Maryland News Net

Members of the St Mary’s County Amateur Radio Association will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, June 23 – 24 at Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department.

Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. For more than 100 years, Amateur Radio — sometimes called ham radio — has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, all without needing a cell phone or the Internet.

Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network. More than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day in 2017. “It’s easy for anyone to pick up a computer or smartphone, connect to the Internet and communicate, with no knowledge of how the devices function or connect to each other,” said David Isgur, communications manager for the American Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur Radio. “But if there’s an interruption of service or you’re out of range of a cell tower, you have no way to communicate. Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of Amateur Radio during a communications outage.” “Hams can literally throw a wire in a tree for an antenna, connect it to a battery-powered transmitter and communicate halfway around the world,” Isgur added. “Hams do this by using a layer of Earth’s atmosphere as a sort of mirror for radio waves.

In today’s electronic do-it-yourself (DIY) environment, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other scientific disciplines, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters or emergencies if the standard communication infrastructure goes down.” Anyone may become a licensed Amateur Radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as 9 and as old as 100. And with clubs such as the St Mary’s Amateur Radio Association, it’s easy for anybody to get involved right here in Southern Maryland. The Group for Earth Observation’s aim is to enable amateur reception of weather and earth imaging satellites that are in orbit or planned for launch in the near future. Membership of GEO is free.

Among the items in this newsletter Francis Bell G7CND writes about the GEO display at the Kempton Park Amateur Radio Rally, Les Hamilton provides an update on the Meteor M2 satellite and of course there are the impressive weather satellite images received by members.
