Today’s Sun (artificially-colored in yellow) seen at the…

Today’s Sun (artificially-colored in yellow) seen at the 171-angstrom wavelength (Extreme Ultraviolet, or EUV), as viewed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA).

At this wavelength, at a wavelength not seen by the un-aided eye, we observe the Sun with the 17.1 nm (171 A) filter. This Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) waveband is used to monitor the corona and upper transition region. With this filter, we can see the myrid of massive magnetic field lines, from simple to complex, that weave and twist throughout the Sun.

The image is a ‘false color image’, meaning that observed data are in a range outside of what human eyes can see, so the data are digitally recast into colors that emphasize physically important features. This view is created from data gathered by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite that flies above Earth’s atmosphere in an inclined geosynchronous orbit.

Emissions captured in this image come from iron (Fe), a trace element in the solar atmosphere that emits Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) light when heated to temperatures in excess of one million deg K. In the solar corona the temperatures are so high that most chemical elements have lost many of their electrons. Some of the remaining electrons still attached to the atom emit EUV radiation in narrow wavebands or lines.

The 17.1 nm filter, or channel, is dominated by emissions from highly ionized iron: 8 times ionized (missing 8 electrons) iron–Fe IX. The roman numeral descriptors are consistent with spectral notation: the level of ionization for a given roman numeral is one unit larger that the actual number of missing electrons. The temperatures associated with this level of ionization is about 6 x 10^5 K.

The bright regions in this image correspond to regions of closed magnetic field loops that trap the hot, emitting plasma. Large bright regions are often called active regions. The dark regions correspond to cooler temperatures and possibly to locations where magnetic field lines open into the heliosphere, and thus, do not trap hot plasma.

Latest TEC map from NASA. What is TEC? Total Electron Content…

Latest TEC map from NASA. What is TEC? Total Electron Content (or TEC) is an important descriptive quantity for the ionosphere of the Earth. TEC is the total number of free electrons integrated between two points, along a tube of one meter squared cross section, i.e., the electron columnar number density. Affected by solar activity, Total Electron Content (TEC) describes the total number of free electrons present within one square meter between two points (i.e. between the receiver and satellite involved in measuring TEC).

These maps are also used to monitor ionospheric weather, and to nowcast ionospheric storms that often occur responding to activities in solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere as well as thermosphere.

3Y0Z —> “The 3Y0Z team members are safely home”, Bob, K4UEE reported on  5
March.  “We have been home  about  two weeks now, after  31 days aboard  our
vessel M/V Betanzos.
We  have  been  to  Bouvet  Island,  and  as  a  result,  we have  a  better
appreciation for the challenges we face.  It is a dark, dismal and dangerous
place. Yet, when the sun shines, it is magnificent.
The most difficult thing to reflect upon is the final day offshore, when  we
saw the  island, crystal clear  in  calm winds, less than  a mile away.  The
conditions were  perfect for our  first  reconnaissance flight and  possible
landing  of  men  and  camp  infrastructure.  But, during the violent  night
before, the Captain had made the decision to abort.  In retrospect, his call
was  clairvoyant.  The mechanical,  propulsion  failure  on  the  ship  that
occurred  would have  brought  disaster, if it resulted  in some  of our men
being stranded ashore.
We are sure you are wondering  what happens now?  Well, we are not the  kind
f people to give up. The same thing happened when we were trying to activate
Peter I in 2005.  We came back the following year and with DAP’s (the vessel
owner) help, we got it done.
We are optimistic about a fair settlement and a resulting refund of some  of
our money paid  to  DAP for this  recent  attempt to  activate Bouvet.  That
money, and what  we still have  in the bank  will  allow us to begin  making
plans to try again.
We have begun the difficult task of looking for a suitable vessel, and would
hope to go back to Bouvet in  the next year or two.  Obviously, we will keep
you informed.
Thank you for the hundreds of favorable  and  encouraging comments from  our
financial  supporters  and  sponsors.  No one has  asked  for  any of  their
contributions back, and, in fact, many have  offered additional support  for
the next chapter in this book.  We are hopeful that  those of  you who  have
invested in this project will see fit to ‘roll over’ your financial  support
to the next attempt.
So, if we can pull all  the moving  parts together,  we are going to try  it
again. Hopefully, this time, with a different outcome”.

CASS AWARD —> The annual  Cass Awards  (http://www.cassaward.com/)  honour
the wisdom  and  spirit  of  Cass WA6AUD (SK) and  encourage DXpeditions  to
maximize the number of  DXers worked with a  Plaque for the  single-operator
DXpedition that works the most unique callsigns within 2 weeks or less,  and
a  Plaque  for  the  “unlimited”  DXpedition  that  works  the  most  unique
callsigns.
The 2017 Single-Operator Cass Award has been won by  Janusz Wegrzyn, SP9FIH:
“By  working  10,087  unique  stations  during  his  one-man  DXpedition  to
Palestine as E44WE, Janusz demonstrated an outstanding effort to log as many
DXers as possible”.

CLUB LOG’S MOST WANTED LIST —> The latest  Most Wanted List, generated  on
8 March,  is  available  at  https://secure.clublog.org/mostwanted.php.  The
information is derived  from   QSOs  uploaded  to  Club Log (currently 483.9
million log entries available for analysis) and, to  improve  quality,  only
QSOs that have QSLs confirmed are  considered to be worked.  The most wanted
charts are rebuilt once per month, on average. The top 10 Entities are:
1.   P5    DPRK (NORTH KOREA)          6.   KH1   BAKER HOWLAND ISLANDS
2.   3Y/B  BOUVET ISLAND               7.   BV9P  PRATAS ISLAND
