Commission continues to search for illegal operations in the Garden State
The Federal Communications Commission has made it clear that stamping out illegal radio operations is a priority, particularly in those areas of the country that have the largest concentration of pirate activity.
New Jersey in particular is a hotspot, according to the FCC. The FCC has sent out 241 notices to alleged pirate operations in the Garden State since the commission began tracking its efforts in 2003, behind only New York (with 511) and Florida (with 454), according to the FCC’s new page dedicated to pirate radio enforcement actions.
With that in mind, the FCC is targeting New Jersey in earnest, most recently the city of East Orange, a city with a population of 64,000.

In early May, agents from the New York Office of the Enforcement Bureau handed out two letters at one stop. After allegedly confirming via direction-finding techniques that radio signals on were emanating from a commercial property at 55 Washington St., agents delivered notices of unlicensed operation to two individuals — Jean Charles and Matt Twersky — who the FCC said have allegedly been operating an unlicensed radio station at from a commercial property at that location. In Charles’ case, the notice was sent to him directly; in Twersky’s case, the notice was also sent to 55 Washington Holdings LLC.
In the notice of unlicensed operation, agents allegedly discovered that the stations were operating at a strength that exceeded the maximum permitted level of 100 microvolts per meter (μV/m) at 3 meters for nonlicensed devices.
Each were warned that operating radio transmitting equipment without a valid radio station authorization is a violation of Federal law, and that an operator may be subject to monetary fines and criminal sanctions. Each individual has 10 days to respond with evidence they have FCC authority to operate.

Consistent service anticipated in cars worldwide
Over the past several months, DTS has been working with automakers, their suppliers, broadcasters and global internet service providers to ensure that all aspects of the DTS Connected Radio system are ready for rapid deployment, integration and commercial launch. Last week, the company announced that one of the final links in the chain, the Connected Radio API, is ready for release.
”This is a big issue,” explains Jeff Jury, general manager, automotive at Xperi. ”It is this one API, common to all platforms, that enables Connected Radio to work seamlessly worldwide.”

The components of the DTS Connected Radio solution — the automotive API, along with global points of presence, automotive hardware and software development kits, and broadcaster support platforms — says Jury, form a complete ecosystem to ensure a consistent, reliable service can be delivered to cars wherever they are sold worldwide.
Jury goes on to add that PoPs have been established around the world with leading infrastructure providers to ensure service performance and scalability across all major automotive markets in North America, Europe and Asia.
Utilizing an IP connection installed in a vehicle, DTS Connected Radio delivers an analog and digital (DAB and HD Radio) AM/FM experience by pairing broadcast programming with IP-delivered content. DTS Connected Radio aggregates metadata, such as artist and song information, on-air radio program information, station contact information and more, directly from broadcasters around the world to deliver an enhanced visual experience in the vehicle.
Additionally, the development and implementation of a wide range of broadcaster interfaces to ensure broad integration with leading broadcasters around the world has been completed. These interface activities have enabled DTS to efficiently work with broadcasters either through aggregators (Radioplayer, TagStation, Radioapp, etc.), open standards (RadioDNS) or directly with in-house content management systems. DTS has also released the Broadcaster Dashboard, a web based content management system, that provides broadcasters with direct control over their content in the DTS Connected Radio ecosystem.
”Both broadcasters and consumers can look forward to Connected Radio’s debut in next year’s car models,” Jury said.

I went to the Warminster Amateur Radio Club (WARC) hamfest [yesterday] in Bucks County, PA. For some time, I have been thinking about making a loop antenna for AM DXing. It was my lucky day. When I walked to the inside tables, on the very first table was this homemade loop antenna gentleman was selling from an estate.
I snatched it up for $40.
Attached are some photos of it. It’s 25” by 25”, with a swivel base. There are 23 turns of wire and I have no idea what size the capacitor is. I did some preliminary tests and it tunes from 280 kHz to 880 kHz. So it’s the covers the high half of the long wave band and the low half of the AM band.
It’s very well made and I fugue I can modify it to cover the entire AM band.
[…]I hooked the SDRplay RSP2 to it and was getting good signals of major stations all the way to 15 mHz.
That’s with it sitting on my dining room table. Of course the capacitor wouldn’t peak the signals.
So it was a great day at the hamfest!
Indeed that was a great find, Bill! Someone spent a decent amount of time building that furniture-grade loop support. Indeed, it’s very reminiscent of 1920s-30s mediumwave loops!
What I love about your loop (and that of Thomas Cholakov) is that one can see how simple these antennas actually are to build. The only complicated bit is the support, but even that’s simple if you use the shield of a heavy coax or flexible copper tubing.
