E3 – Eritrea 2014 by Foundation for Global Children (FGC)/SEISA Zorro, JH1AJT will be visiting the State of Eritrea (E3) with a member of the House of Representatives Japan and some others, from Monday, 15th until the following Monday 22nd September 2014, for a FGC mission. The group will have meetings with Eritrea’s Ministries of; Health, Transportation & Communications, Education, Foreign Affairs, Information, and Eritrean Sports Commission. Ambassador of the State of Eritrea to Japan will also join the meetings. One of the main objectives of this trip is to finalize a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding Eritrea – Japan Sports Collaboration (2014 - 2020) and to be signed on a ceremony program to be held in Asmara on 16th September 2014. Through this project, both parties shall make efforts to promote sports for handicapped people in Eritrea and also to further improve the environments they are placed in. FGC will also support activities for the betterment of education and sanitation for the children of Eritrea. Zorro will try to be QRV (call sign: TBA) in his very limited spare time probably after Thursday, 18th September, mainly SSB and possibly some CW. FT4TA, Tromelin 2014 DXpedition We have just passed the 100 days mark before the beginning of our FT4TA operation to the island of Tromelin. Since the last official press release many things have evolved well; we are extremely fortunate. Thanks to the strong mobilization around our project, we are relatively trustful in the fact of being able to gather the necessary budget. If we do not meet last minute problems, and if individual donations continue to flow at the current rate, we should balance our budget (after the expedition). Some partners have not yet validated their assistance, and we definitively count on them! In addition, several people in Japan have mentioned to us they encountered problems with the Paypal button on our website. In order to circumvent this problem, we invite people who would be in this instance to use our address (tromelin2014@orange.fr) directly from their Paypal account. Almost all of the equipment was gathered by the team. This equipment was lent, purchased or taken from our personal stations. We want to express our thanks to Spiderbeam (masts), Elecraft (radios), OM Power (amplifiers), Microham (interfaces), Messi and Paolini (coaxial cables), DX Engineering (phasing 80m) and DX World.net, which sponsors us the Internet access by satellite to let you use our on-line logbook and read daily news from the team during the operation. At the end of June, three pallets of equipment had been shipped to Reunion island. They have been transported last Sunday to Tromelin (by helicopter) by the logistics service of TAAF. This possibility was offered to us suddenly and was not in our initial plan. Although it induces very important expenditure, we could not let pass this opportunity because it will deeply modify the physiology of our operation. It would not have been possible for us to carry all this equipment on a small aircraft. This freighting marks the true point of no return! Our preliminary works with TAAF continue. Michel FM5CD and Seb F5UFX went at the end of May to Reunion to meet our interlocutors (TAAF, civil aviation, airline company). We want to highlight again the trusted relationship and the incommensurable assistance brought by TAAF. 2014 marks the 60th birthday of the first amateur radio activity from Tromelin. Prepared in collaboration with the philatelic service of TAAF, and drawn by an artist, a special stamp will be put on sale at the time of the Autumn Philatelic Exhibition in Paris (November 6th to 9th). During this event, an amateur radio station will be set-up on the TAAF booth by the radio-club of Provins, F6KOP. They will proceed to demonstrate and make contacts with FT4TA team twice a day. It's very important to promote our activity in such an exhibition. Our website evolves constantly. The pages known as "classical" are available since the beginning (operators, pilots, QSL manager, sponsors) and news articles appeared lately (historical, bandplan..). Others are in preparation and should be published soon (interview of FR5ZU and F6JJX, two ex-"Tromelin" operators, PowerPoint presentation..). It is the ideal time to prepare your station to be ready. On October 30th point your antennas towards the Indian Ocean! Average daily sunspot numbers this week moved from 101.7 to 113.4,

while average daily solar flux changed from 111.8 to 130.5. The

active day according to geomagnetic indicators was Wednesday, August

27, when the planetary A index reached 20. This was the result of a

CME which created aurora at both north and south poles.

 

Predicted solar flux is 115 on August 29 to 31, 120 on September 1 and 2,

then 110, 105, 110 and 120 on September 3 to 6, 125 on September 7 and 8,

then 120, 125, and 130, on September 9 to 11, then 135, 130, 135, and

140 on September 12 to 15, then 145 on September 16 and 17, 140 on

September 18 and 19, 135 on September 20 to 23, and 125 on September

24 and 25.

 

Predicted planetary A index is 10, 8, 12 and 18 on August 29 through

September 1, 5 on September 2 to 5, 8 on September 6 and 7, 12 on

September 8, 5 on September 9 to 12, 8 on September 13, and 5 on

September 14 to 23.

 

OK1HH predicts quiet to active geomagnetic conditions August 29,

active to disturbed August 30, quiet to active August 31 through

September 1, quiet September 2, quiet to unsettled September 3 and 4,

quiet September 5, mostly quiet September 6, quiet to unsettled

September 7 and 8, quiet September 9 to 12, quiet to unsettled September

13, active to disturbed September 14 and 15, mostly quiet September

16 and 17, quiet September 18 to 21, quiet to active September 22 and

active to disturbed September 23.

 

Costas Krallis, SV1XV of Athens, Greece wrote about the numbers at

the end of last week's bulletin: "Now something is wrong about the

mean values. How can the average of seven numbers, all of them lower

than 120, be 138.8? And how can the average of seven numbers, none

of them lower than 4, be 3.7?"

 

Costas is correct, but how could I be so wrong? To correct the

record for last week's bulletin, the average daily sunspot number

for August 14 to 20 was 101.7, average solar flux was 111.8, average

planetary A index was 6.7 and average mid-latitude A index was 7.1.

Chip Sufitchi, N2YO/YO3FWC sent a note about a Romanian propagation

bulletin, which just published its five-hundredth edition.

 

Chip wrote, "I wanted to inform you that the Weekly Propagation

Bulletin hosted by the popular Romanian web site Radioamator.ro just

released issue 500. One month ago the web site celebrated 10 years

of continuous presence on the web by activating a special call sign

(YR10RRO) and releasing a decennial award.

 

The main section in the bulletin discusses some interesting

propagation events occurring recently, including VHF/UHF if any,

propagation facts during a recent major contest as reported by

participants, or a forecast for the weekend's contest, if any

significant one is scheduled. It does also inform readers about

interesting articles with propagation/solar content found on the

internet, or recent reported facts about the current solar cycle.

The last section is a one week forecast for solar and geomagnetic

activity, based on NOAA and IPS reports. Part of the bulletin is

also the monthly propagation diagrams, generated on the first of

each month, showing propagation in several directions centered on

YO. The simulation is powered by VOAprop, a software tool created by

G4ILO."

Pete Corp, K2ARM sent a lament about the end of the sporadic-E

season: 

 

"I guess 6 meter E skip has disappeared for this season. July 21 and

July 23 were the only European openings that I had. I used an

overgrown dipole and 40 watts. I worked: G8BCG, G4FJK, ON4IQ, F6BLP,

EI3KD, F8GGD, GM3SEK, G0JHC, F6AUS, F2DX, IK5MEJ, and Bert, F6HKA.

It was nice while it lasted. Thanks for your reports. I sure hope HF

conditions will get better soon."

 

The overgrown dipole Pete uses is an Extended Double Zepp antenna.

Do a web search for "EDZ antenna" or "double extended zepp" or

"extended double zepp" for more information on this old, interesting

and effective antenna. You will discover many useful references. I

first ran across this antenna in the 1970s when operating 2-meter FM

simplex while parked near the top of Mount Sutro in San Francisco. I

worked Art Childs, W6TYP (SK) who was using one oriented vertically

on 2 meters, I think somewhere near Salinas, and later he sent me a

diagram showing how it was built.

DX LOG ARCHIVE  PROGRAMME  --->  "A  major  donation  from  noted  DXer  Kan
Mizoguchi, JA1BK, to the ARRL Second Century Campaign will support  'The  DX
Log Archive Endowed by JA1BK'. Earnings from the  generous  gift  will  fund
the creation and management of a DX Log Archive Program for  paper  DX  logs
of rare and significant DXpeditions that took  place  predominantly  in  the
1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The  archive  also  would  include  pre-1950  paper
logs, as well as those from rare operations,  and  logs  kept  by  long-time
residents of very rare entities.
The ARRL will be reaching out to  the  DX  community  to  collect  paper  DX
station logs for inclusion. All logbooks will be inventoried and  housed  at
ARRL Headquarters. Confirmations from archived logs will be  made  available
via Logbook of the World (LoTW) or, upon request,  with  a  traditional  QSL
card.
The ARRL Membership and Volunteer Programs Department  will  manage  the  DX

FT4TA ---> "We have just passed the 100 days mark before  the  beginning  of
our FT4TA operation to the island  of  Tromelin.  Since  the  last  official
press release many things have evolved well; we  are  extremely  fortunate".
The equipment was shipped to Reunion Island in late June, and on  24  August
was helicoptered to Tromelin by the logistics  service  of  TAAF.  Read  the

+ SILENT KEY + We should like to express our sincere condolences  to  Bernie
McClenny, W3UR, Editor of The Daily DX, on the passing of  his  father  Tony
(N3ME), who lost his battle with cancer on 25 August at  70  years  of  age.
Tony was a DXCC Honor Roll member  with  350  entities  confirmed  including
North Korea, and served more than nine  years  as  mayor  of  Bethany  Beach
(Delaware).
Astronaut and Space Shuttle veteran Steven Nagel (N5RAW) passed away  on  21
August. He was 67. He flew on four Shuttle missions, and in  April  1991  he
was the commander of the first all-ham Space Shuttle  crew  aboard  Atlantis
(with KB5AWP, N5QWL, N5RAX and  N5SCW)  during  the  Shuttle  Amateur  Radio
Experiment programme, the forerunner to ARISS.
