NCDXF PRESS RELEASE (KP1 Navassa Grant). FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION --
NCDXF Announces Major Grant to K1N Navassa Island DXpedition --
[edited]
November 22, 2014: The Northern California DX Foundation is pleased
to
announce an enabling major contribution of $35,000 to the K1N Navassa
Island DXpedition planned for January 2015. Navassa is #1 on the
ClubLog
Most Wanted List for 2014.
Without major financial support from NCDXF, DXpeditions like this
to
rare, challenging, and expensive DXCC entities would not be possible.
Navassa is an environmentally fragile area with access strictly
controlled
by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service since 1996. No approved DXpedition
has
operated there since that time. The KP1-5 Project has been working
for
over 12 years to obtain permission. There are strict limitations to
the
number of visitors and the time allowable on the island. Access has
been
granted for two weeks in January, as that month has the least bird
nesting.
However, January weather makes access by sea all but impossible. For
safety,
the USFWS requires a helicopter landing for all personnel and
equipment;
hence the cost/budget of this “backyard” DXpedition rivals that of a
Southern Ocean DXpedition. Details of the DXpedition are at:
For the past 42 years the NCDXF has funded major DXpeditions to
many
Most Wanted Entities.
The credit for large grants like this goes to NCDXF contributors
through-
out the world. These are individuals and clubs who understand the
economics
of DXpeditions to rare entities and who play their part toward making
them
possible. Have you contributed yet?
73, Tom Berson, ND2T [NCDXF President <http://www.ncdxf.org>]
PJ7, SINT MAARTEN. Dave, WJ2O, and his XYL Chris will be visiting
with
friends on Sint Maarten and will be active as PJ7/WJ2O between
February
18-25th (2015). Activity will be on 40-10 meters, and he plans to be
in
the ARRL CW DX Contest (February 21-22nd) as a
Single-Op/All-band/Low-
Power entry. Outside the contest, Dave can usually be found on
30/17/12m
bands operating CW. QSL via N2ZN and LoTW. For more info and updates,

The purpose of this experimental Web site is to provide 24-7-365
actual
(REALTIME) band condition information to CW QRPp, QRPe and CW/SSB
for
Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of
benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for
Nets
and casual QSO's. This information is NOT based on any software
pre-
dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a
new Ionospheric sounding method called "HF Ionospheric
Interferometry"
which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by
NASA.

VU4, ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS (VU4KV Press Release)[edited]. Sent
out
at 01:45 GMT, 22 Nov 2014, from Neil Island -- Krish, W4VKU, reports
that
he now has 6 stations up and running. He has problems with low
voltage
on the 240V supply under load, and he has the resort electrician
working
on this issue. Stations 1 to 4 are working OK on high power. Station
5
has been on low power because the Elekraft KPA500 amp has been
tripping
out on the low voltage. Station 6 is coming on line now that another
op
has joined the team. This station is also suffering low voltage trips
but
the resort electrician is working on this as well.
The Acom 1500 has been performing OK with the low voltage. The
Elekraft
KPA500 has tripping issues and the Ameritron AL80B has relay closure
problems with the low voltage. The team is addressing these issues.
Today the team will be installing the 2 element 80m array and plans
to
get at least one element of the 160m array in operation. These arrays
will be installed in the salt water and because of this installation,
activities on these arrays has to be performed at low tides which
will
occur after local noon today.
Internet data connection has been an ongoing issue, but Krish is
taking
steps to ensure that the logs are uploaded as quickly as possible
through
the use of memory sticks and e-mail but some delay is to be expected.
Krish is interested in how the 40m 4 Square is working and is
asking
for some real reports from NA stations on this band.... (de Mark,
