Sunspots were first discovered by Theophrastus near 325 BC. Regarding Theophrastus and sunspots, here’s a fun reference: http://g.nw7us.us/1jCAsir

Sunspots are dark spots on the sun that last from less than a day to several months. The average sunspot temperature is about 3000 Kelvin within the darker regions, and that temperature is lower than that of the surrounding, hotter gas. If sunspots were removed from the Sun, placed in orbit alone, they would appear very bright!
