Ham radio field day is June 23-24 in Prescott – The Daily Courier

Ham radio or amateur radio is a licensed form of communication over moderate to very long distance, using two-way radio. Today, there are far more licensed radio amateurs (hams) than ever before.

A nationwide amateur radio gathering, known as Field Day, is set for Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24. Thousands of hams will be working their radios across the country.

During Field Day, clubs like the Yavapai Amateur Radio Club (YARC) offer introductions to interested folks by providing literature, visits to the club’s station and a chance to grab the microphone and talk to an amateur radio operator in another state. YARC will participate in Field Day from the Jeep Posse Headquarters, 1200 Commerce Drive, in Pioneer Park, Prescott, right behind the hockey rink. The location will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Amateur radio is a hobby, but with some serious aspects. There are many amateurs who help out in emergency communications through Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Others provide communications support for public service events, such as bike and road races in the Prescott area.

YARC is the largest amateur radio club in Arizona. To learn more, visit http://www.w7yrc.org.
