Sussex County Amateur Radio Club demonstrates science, skill, and service June 23-24 at Field Day – New Jersey Herald

LAFAYETTE — Members of the Sussex County Amateur Radio Club will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, June 23-24 at 21 Sunset Inn Road.

Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. The event is free and open to the public.

The driveway is diagonal from the Quick Chek. There will be signs up at the end of the driveway.

Field Day shows ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network. More than 35,000 people participated in Field Day in 2016.

Communication seems easy these days with cell phones and the internet. “But if there’s an interruption of service or you’re out of range of a cell tower, you have no way to communicate. Ham radio functions completely independent of the internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes,” said Dave Isgur of the American Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur Radio.

There are more than 725,000 licensed hams in the U.S., from ages 5 to 100. The Sussex County club welcomes new members.
