The Shadow Minister for Financial Services, Clare O’Neil, has told ABC Radio Darwin that a Shorten Government will bring short-wave radio back to the Northern Territory, after it was disbanded by the ABC in 2017, saying restoring the service “is actually crucially important for safety in the Territory.
“Malarndirri (McCarthy) spoke earlier today about a gentleman who was out fishing, and he didn’t know about the cyclone because he didn’t have access to short wave radio. We know there are long haul trucks travelling around the Territory, and short-wave radio is crucial for them to understand what’s going on around them. So that’s why a Shorten Labor Government will bring this back.”
Asked if that meant that Labor would fund the million dollars or so to meet the expense, the Shadow Minister said “That’s correct” though she was unable to commit to any further expansion of the short-wave service outside of the NT.

Des Moines (Iowa) Water Works (DMWW) uses secure radiotelemetry to monitor various remote-site parameters to alert staff to problems. Earlier this year, DMWW experienced periodic and sometimes total failure of the radio system. After no solution could be found, staff reached out to various resources, including the FCC. Polk County ARES also was brought in, and eight operators assembled to track down the interference, working the late shift.
After a process of elimination, the ARES volunteers pinpointed the interfering signal to defunct equipment atop a downtown Des Moines building. The team contacted the owner of the license associated with the equipment and got permission to disable it, and DMWW confirmed that the signal interference was gone. Collectively, the Polk County ARES volunteer team spent approximately 70 hours to assist DMWW. Following the experience, DMWW installed a more robust radio system with encryption and established stronger relationships with several entities that can assist if similar problems arise. — Thanks to H2Oline and The ARES E-Letter

If “73” means “Best Regards,” and “88” means “Love and Kisses,” what does “33” mean? It means “love sealed with friendship and mutual respect between one YL and another YL.” “33” was coined by Clara Reger, W2RUF of Buffalo, New York and officially adopted as the universal “YL greeting” by the YLRL in 1940.
Birth of the Thirty-Three
Clara had her ticket
She also had a rig
Because she was just startin
It wasn’t very big.
She slowly tuned the crystal,
And watched the meter drop.
Then tapped the key a couple times
To be sure it wouldn’t stop.
Now everything was ready.
She called a short CQ
And received an answer
On thirty-six sixty-two.
They chewed the fat ‘bout stuff and things.
'bout dresses, work and dates.
They finally called it QRT
The girl sent eighty-eights.
Clara thought it a might funny
Whether it be Miss. or Mrs.
To end a perfect QSO
By sending “Love and Kisses”
It sounds too sentimental;
Just a little too much “goo”
To be sending “Love and Kisses”
To a girl the same as you.
For an entire week she pondered;
Wouldn’t even touch the rig.
She pushed her slide rule by the hour,
Employing “logs” and “trig”.
She added and subtracted.
What could the answer be?
To reach a happy medium
Twixt eighty-eight and seventy-three.
Clara finally looked up from her work
All smiles and not forlorn.
Twas July in Nineteen Forty
That thirty-three was born.
There’s no real definition
But it’s meaning is known well.
It’s how a YL says good evening
To another friend YL.

Sasquatch Stomp - Complete Details
The Sasquatch Stomp is an amateur radio contest sponsored by the Pacific North West QRP Group designed to get QRP operators on the air for a fun event similar to the Zombie Shuffle. Unlike “real” contests, there is no point to this event other than simply getting on the air and having fun. The event is scored, but unlike other contests the final score for each participant will be a negative number with the object being to get the lowest number below zero.
Why do Sasquatches Stomp? Because we can, and we’re good at it!
From 21:00 UTC Friday until 03:00 UTC Saturday (March 29).
