Just got my Tech, any recommendations?

Just got my Tech license tonight. Tried for the General even though I hadn’t studied for it at all and just missed it.

I’m from Southeast Michigan and I’m going to be heading north in a couple weeks and have a solid 4-5 hour ride ahead of me. Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a rig for the ride up and anything to keep an ear out for.

I just got my General, now what?

Well today I took my exams, passed tech and general no problem after spending the last 4 weeks studying those two, I did try Extra for grins and failed it, not by a narrow margin either. Anyway I mostly just did it on a whim and I’m going to graduate as an electrical engineer in May so it could be useful in my career so now I need to get set up for transmitting when my call sign is posted. I could easily do something like $100-$200 to get started, much more than that gets a bit harder since I’m still in college so money is a bit tight. Another constraint is that I do need to be fairly mobile as I move somewhat frequently, again because of college/soon to be early in career. That all said, I’m not afraid of a soldering iron and know my way around an electrical schematic so some DIY or kit building is well within my abilities if it keeps costs down.

WSJT-X will soon use a new encoding for things like ‘CQ VT’ or ‘CQ NA’, so you may see strange characters until you upgrade if others compile from devel source early.

Just bought my first big boy radio! It’s only a matter of time!

Just bought a gently used icom706 mkiig with manuals for 500 dollars. Haven’t yet bought a power supply or made the antennas necessary, but I can soon receive all the good bands, and as soon as I get letters, will be able to talk to the world!

Any tips on getting a 30A power supply at a good price?

Crimp tool for Anderson Poles / LMR400 / LMR240?

Hello,

Right after listening to the latest ARRL podcast about Anderson Poles my transceiver got disconnected from the power supply right in the middle of a CW QSO. As a result I finally decided to get myself an Anderson Crimp.

Is there a product out there that (applying different dies) can also crimp LMR400 and LMR240? I’m looking for something in the $50 range…

Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society Hosts Hamfest at Broadbeach:

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure and for 25 years the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society has been cashing in on this. Today’s electronics flea market Hamfest will be held from 8.30am at the Albert Waterways Community Centre on the corner of Hooker and Sunshine Blvds, Broadbeach (opposite Pacific Fair). The not-for-profit club’s event is its biggest fundraiser of the year with 42 tables of gear on sale, including old amateur radios, electronics, computers and tape gear.

Am I electrocution myself or experiencing RF burns, or are these things just hot?

I have two different sensations where I’m not sure what’s going on.

So, I left my CW key at home the other day, and in the spirit of homebrew, I took the Aux cord out of my car, plugged one end into the radio and on the other end, I bent up a spare peice of wire to close the circuit and make some beebs happen and all was well. But then something happened, it felt warm enough to take me by surprise and I dropped it. I wrapped most of it in electrical tape and it was better. For grounding I have 2 ground radials on a vertical wire hooked to my tuner.

On a related note, I know when we think quality radios, we think of the UV5R. So I was chatting along, and the little metal clip on the side began to have a similar uncomfortable feeling.

So What does an RF burn feel like?

Those who have had a tower or antenna dispute with your neighbors: what was your relationship like with them before the dispute?

I feel like I have been reading about more and more tower or antenna disputes between hams and their neighbors.

I’m just curious — for those that have been in a dispute with neighbors over a proposed or erected tower or antenna, what was your relationship like with these neighbors before this? How long have you lived there before the dispute? What was their reasoning for being upset?
