Looking for participants in radio art project on 12/8.

Howdy all. I’m a student at the San Francisco Art Institute and I’m doing a performance piece for one of my final projects.

In the morning (after 9:00 AM Pacific) and evening (after 6:00 PM), I’ll be sending out a number of images. I haven’t decided whether to use SSTV or facsimile yet; fax has the advantage of high resolution, and SSTV has the advantage of not taking five minutes for a single image. FLdigi seems to receive fax just fine.

After I send an image, I’m asking that anyone who received it key up and describe what they see.

My class will be watching and listening in the morning (final critique aaaaaa) and anyone who wanders up to the roof I’ll be on during our class show will be there in the evening. I’ll have a computer set up to receive the outgoing signal using its mic so people can see what it looks like.

I’ll be on 20m with my Drake B-line twins, transmitting out of San Francisco with 100-150 watts, so folks on the east coast may be out of luck.

Let me know if you’re planning to participate in the morning or evening. I may also make a post on QRZ about this; the more viewpoints, the better.

Thanks!

Is your SWR 1:1, “one to one,” or simply 1?

KB6NU-TECH-guideA question came up on the ham_instructor mailing list this morning with regard to the next update of the Technician Class question pool. Bob, K0NR, wrote:

While reviewing the Element 2 (Technician) question pool, I am reminded that the question pool SWR readings are referred to as “10 to 1”, “5 to 1” and “1 to 1”, etc. I suppose this emphasizes the “ratio” nature of SWR, but it just sounds old school to me—kind of like saying “kilocycles per second.” I just refer to SWR readings as a single number (e.g., 10, 5 or 1). What do you folks think?

Being a freelance writer and editor, I found this to be an interesting question. There are lots of these kinds of grammatical questions, especially when it comes to technical writing. Normally, we just write or say things how we learned them, whether they’re technically correct or not. In this case, I guess that I’d have to say that I still think of SWR in terms of “<some number> to 1” and  normally write it as “x:1.”

I next did a quick Google search for “SWR specification.” The results were mixed. For example, the National Instruments Web page, “Understanding Key RF Switch Specifications” simply gives the VSWR as a number, but Anritsu’s “Understanding Cable & Antenna Analysis” gives an example as “1.2:1.” There were numerous other examples of both forms, so while the search was interesting, it didn’t really yield a definitive answer. I guess that’s true of most Google searches, though. 🙂

Another thing that I found interesting in researching this is that the notation we use—1:1, 2:1, etc.—is called odds notation. Apparently, it’s still used in betting, but I can’t think of another instance in which this notation is used in a technical context.

I asked Steve Ford, WB8IMY, the chief editor of QST, about this, and he said:

For QST, our style is to express SWR in mathematical ratio notation such as “2:1,” never as “2 to 1.”

Ward Silver, N0AX, who edits the license manuals and the Handbook for the ARRL, also replied:

Speaking from experience with the Question Pool Committee, they do not like using equations or symbols in the questions or answers.  That includes “:” and they substitute text for it.  This is an old habit from the days when text files had to be of the lowest-common-denominator so that everyone could read or print them.

My suggestion is to submit a request to replace “2 to 1” with “2:1” or just “2” so that the question pool is brought into compliance with current practices.

I’m siding with N0AX and will suggest that, at the very least, they replace the “x to x” nomenclature. I’m leaning towards asking them to replace it with the odds notation, i.e. 1:1, 2:1, etc., if only because that’s the QST style. I’m not 100% sure about that second thought, though, so I’d like to hear what you think.

How long do vanity callsigns take to process?

Hi All: Recently licensed and applied for a vanity callsign (deceased relative, expired over 2 years ago) as soon as my initial paperwork cleared.

Wondering how long it usually takes them to process the request.

Bandplan question

I am reluctant to ask this one. I understand the amateur band plan and how it is divided. Ive noticed tonnes of amateur activity at 6 to 6.3 Mhz and also at 13 to 13.3 Mhz. Ive even noticed it used during contests but i cant find any reference to it anywhere. Is it unoficial or am i crazy.

Echolink Node radio suggestion

Hey guys,

Just wanted to check in and see if I could get suggestions for which radio I should use for an echolink node (simplex).

My boss is allowing me to place an antenna on top of our building (~40-50ft) and I’ve decided that I’d like to create an echolink node.

Ideally, I’d like to spend <$150 ($200 absolute max) on a radio to drive the thing. I have a yaesu 3100R in the car that I really, really like but I’m not sure it would be up to the task transmitting constantly for 2-3 hours at a time during nets.

I’m also open to adding fans to the case, etc to help it out during high activity.

What rig would you guys pick up?

Recommended battery replacement for the Yaesu FT-60R?

I’m resurrecting my old Yaesu FT60R because we finally got a new repeater! But the FNB-83 stock battery won’t take a charge due to it’s age. I’ve looked on the web and have seen a plethora of batteries to the point where I’m confused! Can anyone recommend replacement battery for the FT-60R/FNB-83?

Poor Range on 25 watt mobile. Antenna placement to blame?

So I freshly installed a Btech 2501 and a 19 inch UHF VHF antenna on an nmo mount, L bracketed under the my license plate. When calling repeaters I’ve been able to hit with my handheld, I have discovered that I can barely hit them and receive a tone with the mobile radio and antenna.

I think the antenna placement is to blame. The plate is on the trunk of my 2013 Elantra, so there isn’t much car directly under the mount. Is there anyway to make this location work, or would I have to follow the “more metal under the antenna” rule? Could I ground the antenna directly to the frame or something? If I have to move is, what other locations are plausible without damage to the paint or drilling panels? I am not too experienced with this but just looking for a simple mobile setup instead of carrying around an HT. Thanks for looking.
