How to build a radio telegraph?

I know this question has probably been asked so many times on this sub, but I have additional ideas/questions that may not have been included in other posts.

Anyways, for a new project I’m thinking of building two sets of radio telegraphs capable of both transmitting & receiving messages. I have a couple ideas of how to build a key; I may even just purchase a set online. What I’m more concerned about is how to build the telegraphs with transmitters & receivers. To be completely honest, I don’t know much about electrical components & building gadgets, but I do want to learn. I figured this was a simple yet interesting project to start with.

Basically I want to build a telegraph that I can use to send messages a short distance, like in another room. I want to make a transmitter that beeps & possibly lights up using an LED when transmitting messages, and does the same to the receiving telegraph. I was wondering if I could possibly use a buzzer to make sound when receiving messages, or if I would need a speaker? (I’m so sorry, I really don’t know much about radios, lol. I’m very eager to learn.)

If anyone has any ideas, schematics, guides, etc. including which electrical components I would need, I would greatly appreciate it.

Tl;dr: I want to make a set of radio telegraphs where the transmitting telegraph lights up & beeps while simultaneously making the receiving telegraph light up and beep.

EDIT: I just wanted to make it clear that I would use the buzzer to generate sound, not as the transmitters. I would preferably like a design that uses modern RF transmitter & receiver components.

Building a radio lab – what components to buy?

Hello, I’m an electronics technician interested in getting licensed (just hasn’t gotten licensed because of bureaucracies) and starting building my own QRP HF radio equipment, just for the learning and sake of it. However, I live in Brazil, where sourcing parts is incredibly difficult, due to an extremely strict customs. Therefore, I would like to hear your suggestions for equipment/components to buy in bulk so I only go through the hassle of importing them once. I’m looking to buy ferrite cores, RF transistors, crystals, transformers and any other stuff I might need. Thanks in advance for the help!

Can I use my 4′ Firestik antenna that is connected to my CB for my in-truck Baofeng 2M radio?

Well? The Baofeng currently has a mag mount whip antenna on top of my truck but I’m wondering if it might be better to use the 4′ Firestik instead.

How can I crimp an N-Connector onto an H100 cable as good as possible without a crimping tool?

I ordred a clamp N-Connector from the internet but they sent me crimp. I do not have a crimping tool. What is the best I could do to put the connector on the cable?

Hunting For NDBs In CLE 213

This coming weekend will see another CLE challenge, this time in two ranges:  240.0 – 259.9 kHz plus 420.0 – 439.9 kHz.

A ‘CLE’ is a ‘Co-ordinated Listening Event‘, as NDB DXers around the world focus their listening time on one small slice of the NDB spectrum.

A nice challenge in this one is to hear the Lansdowne House, Ontario, NDB, ‘YLH‘ on 247 kHz. This one runs 250 watts and gets out well, having been logged from coast to coast. Listen for it on 247.417 kHz with your receiver in the CW mode.

From CLE organizer Brian Keyte, G3SIA, comes the usual ‘heads-up’:

Hi all,

Here are the final details for our 213th co-ordinated listening event this
weekend. First timer logs too? Yes, please!

Days: Friday 25 Nov. to Monday 28 Nov.
Times: Start and end at midday, your LOCAL TIME
Range: 240.0 – 259.9 kHz plus 420.0 – 439.9 kHz
(BOTH ranges are for ALL listeners)

Please log NDBs that you can positively identify in the ranges, plus any
UNIDs that you come across there.
The lower frequency range will be really hard for most Europe listeners,
the higher range not at all easy for most others.

Send your CLE log to the List, if possible as a plain text email and
not in an attachment, with CLE213 at the start of its title.
Show on EVERY LINE of your log:

# The Date (or day ‘dd’) and UTC (the day changes at 00:00 UTC).
# kHz – the beacon’s nominal published frequency (if you know it).
# The Call Ident.

Please show those main items first on each line, BEFORE any optional
details (Location, Offsets, Cycle time, Distance, etc.)
If you send interim logs, do make sure that you also send a ‘Final’ log
containing all your loggings. As always, please make your log useful and
interesting to everyone by including your own location and brief details
of your receiver, aerial(s) and any recording equipment that you used.

I will send the usual ‘Any More Logs?’ email at about 18:00 UTC on
Tuesday so that you can check that your Final log has been found OK.
Do make sure that your log has arrived on the List at the very latest
by 09:00 UTC on Wednesday 30th November.
I hope to complete the combined results later on that day.

(Reminder: You could use any one remote receiver for your loggings,
stating its location and owner – with their permission if required.
A remote listener may NOT also use another receiver, whether local or
remote, to obtain further loggings for the same CLE). 

These listening events serve several purposes. They:

  • determine, worldwide, which beacons are actually in service and on-the-air so the online database can be kept up-to-date
  • determine, worldwide, which beacons are out-of-service or have gone silent since the last CLE covering this range
  • will indicate the state of propagation conditions at the various participant locations
  • will give you an indication of how well your LF/MF receiving system is working
  • give participants a fun yet challenging activity to keep their listening skills honed

Final details can be found at the NDB List website, and worldwide results, for every participant, will be posted there a few days after the event. If you are a member of the ndblist Group, results will also be e-mailed and posted there.

The very active Yahoo ndblist Group is a great place to learn more about the ‘Art of NDB DXing’ or to meet other listeners in your region. There is a lot of good information available there and new members are always very welcome. As well, you can follow the results of other CLE participants from night to night as propagation is always an active topic of discussion.

If you are contemplating getting started on 630m, listening for NDBs  is an excellent way to test out your receive capabilities as there are several NDBs located near this part of the spectrum.

You need not be an ndblist member to participate in the CLEs and all reports, no matter how small, are of much value to the organizers. 

‘First-time’ logs are always VERY welcome!

Please … give the CLE a try … then let us know what NDB’s can be heard from your location! Your report can then be added to the worldwide database to help keep it up-to-date.

Caribbean Tropical Storm Otto

IARU Region 1 Emergency Communications Co-Ordinator Greg Mossop G0DUB reports information received from Cesar Pio Santos HR2P about preparations for Tropical Storm Otto

The storm is threatening Nicaragua and Costa Rica through the remainder of this week. The Nicaraguan Government has raised the alert level for parts of the country to prepare for the storm and the Radio Experimenters Club of Nicaragua (CREN) is also activating their National Emergency Network on the following frequencies;

7098 Main Frequency
7105 Alternate Frequency
3798 Primary Frequency
3805 Alternate Frequency
146,520 Simplex

The Radio Club of Costa Rica is also activating their Network on 7080kHz as an emergency frequency starting at 0000 UT November 23.

Radio Amateurs are requested to listen carefully before transmitting and avoid causing QRM to emergency traffic on those frequencies.

Ham Searches Hills for Balloons, Tracker that Circumnavigated Globe:

LANDAFF — There are many mysteries and secrets in the town’s high hills, including most recently the whereabouts of two silver mylar balloons and the homemade electronic tracker they carried around the world. Mike Hojnowski, an amateur radio enthusiast and systems engineer at Cornell University, launched the balloons and tracker at 12:58 p.m. Oct. 19 from Rhodes Hall at the Ithaca, N.Y. school. Ten days later, he determined that they had crashed here in Landaff, on a west-facing slope and at an elevation of between 1,000 and 1,300 feet after encountering a storm. Hojnowski has been back twice to Landaff to look for the tracker. If he recovers the tracker, he would be only one of seven radio hobbyists who’ve circumnavigated the globe with a homemade tracker, and the only one who actually recovered the device.
