lot
of patience and understands that our operation in TOP BAND is a
rudimentary
form because of the conditions that we have on the island. Thus, each
contact that we can make, will be a victory for us all. Anyway, we
will
be active in 160 meters servicing the requests of many
colleagues."

The purpose of this experimental Web site is to provide 24-7-365
actual
(REALTIME) band condition information to CW QRPp, QRPe and CW/SSB
for
Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of
benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for
Nets
and casual QSO's. This information is NOT based on any software
pre-
dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a
new Ionospheric sounding method called "HF Ionospheric
Interferometry"
which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by
NASA.

became a Silent Key (SK) on February 14th, and on his 74th birthday.
As
mentioned a couple weeks ago Frosty was at a hospice location. He is
a
well-known DXer noted for his African DXpeditions/Safaris and a member
of
the Texas DX Society (see <www.tdxs.net/SK/k5lbu.html>). His family opened
a gofundme page to help with medical and funeral costs at:

VK0EK HEARD ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS. Rich, KY6R, posted the following
on
February 15th [edited]: EXPEDITION LEADER GOES DOWN UNDER TO
COORDINATE
THE PROJECT -- Expedition Organizer/Leader Dr. Robert Schmieder is on
a
2-week multi-stop trip to New Zealand, Tasmania, and Australia to
coordinate
plans, permits, and logistics for the expedition. His first stop was
to
see Peter Hillary (son of Sir Edmund Hillary) in Auckland (see picture
at:
Bob was hosted for several days by team member Jacky Calvo ZL3CW.
They
were able to meet with other radio amateurs who will provide support
for
the expedition, including Gary/ZL2IFB, Chris/ZL2DX, and Lee/ZL2AL,
who
will serve as a radio pilot for the DXpedition.
In Christchurch, Bob met with Rodney Russ of Heritage Expeditions
(who
is providing the vessel), and in Kingston, Tasmania, he met with
staff
at the Australian Antarctic Division (who will issue the permits).
Bob
reports that these meetings went very well, and there is every
expectation
that the expedition can go forward as planned. In particular, the
contract
for the vessel is in hand, and Heritage indicated they can help with
certain
facilities and logistics that will save the expedition some expenses.
The
AAD indicated that the expedition can expect to receive permission to
visit areas of the island normally off-limits to visitors, and to
make
collections of organisms and return with them for laboratory
analysis.
These activities are critical to the expedition’s goal of
“Discovering
Life in the Extremes,” so this step gives assurance that the major
objec-
tives of the expedition can be met.
In Christchurch, Bob met with team member Martin Budd, son of
legendary
Heard Island explorer Grahame Budd, (also a member of the expedition
team).
Team member Rohan Clarke came from Melbourne for the meeting with the
AAD
in Kingston, Tasmania, and they also met with Eric Woehler, expert on
Heard Island and an important advisor to the expedition. Bob will
also
be meeting with staff at the University of Tasmania, including Jodi
Fox,
who will be doing her PhD thesis on the geology of the Laurens
Peninsula.
In a few days, Bob travels to Sydney to meet with Grahame Budd and
with
other Australian team members, including John Weigle and Glen Pacey.
He
will also make an important side trip to Perth to coordinate the
local
(Fremantle) support team.
It is clear that this trip was an essential step to solidify the
formal
structure of the expedition and the coordination of the team. “Now,”
Bob
says, in a flight metaphor, “We have an approved flight plan. The
next
steps are to assemble the cargo, suit up the crew, and prepare for
take-
off in November!”
VK9L, LORD HOWE ISLAND (Update). Operators Pekka/OH1TV and
Pekka/OH2YY
will be active as VK9LC from Lord Howe Island (OC-004)between
February
22-28th. Activity will be mainly SSB, with some CW, using two K3
stations
into 2 element yagis for 20-10m, dipoles for 40/30m and a 3 element
yagi
6m. QSL via OH2YY or QSL Bureau of the SRAL.
VK9L, LORD HOWE ISLAND (Also Possible VK IOTAs). Steve,
G0UIH/VK2IAY/3D2FI,
of Vortex Antennas, will be making a trip back to Australia and the
Pacific

style (as it's his XYL's birthday trip) from Lord Howe Island
(OC-004)
as VK2IAY/9 between December 16-23rd (8 days). Activity will be SSB
only
concentrating on 10/15/17 and 20m, although other bands are possible
as
he hopes to utilize some antenna hardware from his previous
activations.
Steve will also be using various antenna hardware from Vortex Antenna
Systems <www.vortexantennas.co.uk>. On returning to Australia
(between
December 23rd, 2015 and January 16th, 2016), there is a good chance
of
activating other IOTA references around VK although nothing has yet
been
confirmed. Look around 14260/21260/28460 and 18145 kHz. A 4 color
special
double QSL sponsored by Vortex Antenna Systems will be available in
early
2016. QSL via G0UIH, direct or by the Bureau.
