Radio Taboo (Source: Issa Nyaphaga)
Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Alan Roe, who shares this Radio France International article and interview with Issa Nyaphaga, the tour de force behind Radio Taboo.
Here’s a video of the interview:
Thank you so much for sharing this, Alan.
Some of our initial radios received by Radio Taboo.
Readers: what Alan didn’t know is that I’ve been working with Issa via Ears To Our World and can confirm that this station is having a most positive impact on its community!
I was originally introduced to Issa via one of ETOW’s long-time supporters and friends a couple years ago.
At ETOW, we wanted to help establish more Radio Taboo listener groups, so we sent an initial batch of radios to be used in this very rural and remote part of Cameroon.
The radio we sent to Radio Taboo is the Tecsun GR-88 (or “Green-88”). This radio used to be branded by Grundig as the FR200, but Grundig no longer markets this model so we purchase them from Tecsun.
In fact, in a recent email to friends and supporters of Radio Taboo, Issa shared the following photo and noted:
“This man next to me is one of the first beneficiaries of the crank radios donated by Thomas Witherspoon, the founder of “Ears To Our World” a U.S. non-profit. They donated a dozen of these radios to some Radio Taboo’s listers. Radios made it in the Cameroon this week.”

I should mention it’s a logistical challenge to get radios to this part of the world (especially in the summer when the roads are nearly impassable due to rains) but we’re looking into a service that might be able to help in the future with a much larger donation of radios.
Alan, thanks again for sharing this story and giving me an opportunity to tell about our first-hand experience working with Radio Taboo!

Icom IC-9700

Here it is! The all new Icom IC-9700 tri-band direct sampling transceiver. This is a most impressive rig and I will be showing many more videos on this unit. To start, let me show you the rig and talk about some of the features and reasons why this is a total game changer for the hobby.

Direct Sampling Brought to the VHF/UHF World

Built with the VHF/UHF weak signal operator in mind, the IC-9700 is an RF direct sampling receiver for 2m and 70cm. The IF receiver consists of a single, down conversion for 23cm that is between 311 – 371MHz. This design provides a quiet receiver due to Icom’s DSP technology. The robust PA provides 100W on 2m, 75W on 70cm, and 10W on 23cm.

Band Management

In addition to band specific memory channels, the IC-9700 allows band specific receiver and transmitter settings. For transmit, users can make adjustments to RF power, TX power Limit, Limit Power, and TX Delay by band. Basic receiver settings, like the Noise Blanker, Noise Reduction, and others can be tweaked by band with a dynamic Notch and Filter setup by band/mode.

Other Planned Features Include:

  • All mode, tri-band transceiver covering 144, 430/440 as well as 1200MHz
  • Supports CW/AM/SSB/SM/RTTY and D-STAR DV and DD modes
  • Digital Data (DD) mode provides 128 kbps data communication
  • PA provides a powerful 100W (144 MHz), 75W (430/440 MHz) and 10W (1200 MHz) output
  • 4.3″ touch screen color TFT LCD
  • Smooth satellite operation with normal/reverse tracking and 99 satellite channels
  • Real-time, high-speed spectrum scope & waterfall display
  • Dualwatch operation and full-duplex operation in the satellite mode
  • Supports 2 wave simultaneous reception (different band / different mode), full duplex operation.
  • D-STAR Terminal and Access Point mode (RS-MS3A/W)
  • Dual D-STAR receive (decodes two voice streams simultaneously)
  • Full duplex operation/Dual Watch (no V/V or U/U Capability)
  • Main or Sub-Band Scope (Center/Fix mode +/-500kHz Center Mode)
  • Audio Scope
  • CW full break-n
  • 0.5ppm frequency < +/- 0.5ppm (–10°C to +60°C; 14°F to 140°F)
  • Voice Recording/playback function (SD Memory Card)
  • Ethernet Port (Internal RS-BA1 Server)
  • USB audio and control connection
  • DR Memories: 2,500

“Space Weather quiets down this week though we continue to get hit with sporadic pockets of fast solar wind. Activity could increase at high latitudes, with a brief chance for aurora, but expect only unsettled conditions to persist through the remainder of this week. Aurora photographers may have difficulty catching glimpses of the aurora, but luckily that isn’t the only thing in the night sky worth watching.
This week, Earth enters the Lyrids meteor shower, which could give us a decent show through April 25. Skywatchers will need to get out of city lights and mind the bright, full moon on the 20th and 21st to maximize chances of seeing the spectacle. Meanwhile, back on the Sun, bright region 2738 is rotating out of view so solar flux should drop back into the low 70s by early next week.
This means amateur, shortwave radio, and emergency responders will notice the drop off in communications as we fall back to poor radio propagation on Earth’s dayside. However, propagation on 6m due to the Lyrids might actually pick up this week! As for GPS, users should be enjoying decent reception all around the globe easily over the next few days. Learn the details of the Lyrid shower, when solar flux will drop, and what else our Sun has in store this week.”

DXER ham radio news

Djibouti J20DX IOTA DXpedition operators Col McGowan, MM0NDX; Jonathan Bowes, MM0OKG, and Christian Cabre, EA3NT, have thrown in the towel on their efforts to operate from two infrequently activated African islands — Moucha Island (AF-053) and the very rare Sept-Frères (AF-059). Their J20DX operation was set to run from April 16 – April 21, but McGowan’s and Bowe’s radio equipment was impounded by customs upon their arrival at the airport, despite the fact that Cabre had cleared customs smoothly 2 days earlier. The team had “official radio licenses being issued by Djibouti Telecom” permitting them to operate radio without any conditions, they reported on the J20DX website.
The operators were told that the Djibouti security agency would make a decision on whether they could obtain necessary authorization to retrieve their equipment, but time wore on along with official inertia. Due to time constraints, the delay quashed plans to activate AF-059.
“Nobody is more disappointed about that than us,” they said on their website Wednesday, expressing optimism that they would still be able to be active from Moucha or Maskali Island AF-053 and remain until Friday evening or Saturday morning. “Of course, this depends on the aforementioned bags being released by custom officials,” they added.
Still without all their gear, on April 18, they made the crossing to Moucha Island, picked a location to set up, and immediately assembled antennas for 20, 17, and 15 meters.
“Literally 5 minutes before the first CQ from AF-053, we received a phone call from National Security saying signatures were needed for the authorization letter to permit us to collect our impounded gear,” the J20DX team recounted. “This same letter would also allow us to depart Djibouti without any more issues at airport customs. However, we had to return to the mainland to get the letter.”
With the weekend in Djibouti being Friday and Saturday, this Thursday would be their last chance to obtain the important authorization letter prior to heading home. “Before we had even started, teardown began. Yes, we left the island 2 hours after arriving. AF-053 is now also cancelled,” they announced.
Upon reaching the National Security offices, the team said, unfortunately, “no authorization letter [was] to be seen.”

DXER ham radio news

My son and me Back in the day without HOA, condo’s an complicated city living.
Good afternoon and it’s time to post the final segment regarding ham radio and the condo life. Today I will be looking at the grief living in the city, close neighbors and poor quality control on electronics. You don’t have to live in a condo to experience any of the above mentioned issues but condo dwellers may not be able to setup a separate listening antenna, rejig their antenna or change the antenna. Living in a condo has it’s ups and downs……..other than the elevator that is! No snow to shovel and no lawn to cut and sometimes some decent height to mention a few things but there is very limited antenna real estate and very close neighbors who’s LED bulbs, Plasma tv’s and other electronic gizmo’s that may be are very close to you and your antenna. If you are having an issue with noise first it’s very important to find out whether it’s man made or natural. The ARRL has a great page on just this were they offer up recorded examples of RFI.
Once you have identified the RFI the trick now is to figure out where it’s coming from, it is from your neighbor or from your own QTH? In my townhouse I had a crazy issue with a plasma TV and the great news was it was coming from our own TV. When you have RFI and it’s your own that is easier to deal with than when from others around you. Lets have a look at some devices out there that can help out with RFI. The first item that comes to mind is made by MFJ and it’s the MFJ-1026 noise canceller. It comes with an internal antenna (the antenna that picks up the noise) The best way to see how this unit works is to provide you with a link to my YouTube page were I posted a video regarding the MFJ-1026   If you have an Elecraft K3 radio I posted a second video using the MFJ-1026 plus the noise reduction on the K3 and I imagine this can work with most modern transceivers Welcome back and I hope you enjoyed the videos and I do believe there are more out there if you care to Google them.
In the condo I am in now as you know I have the MFJ mag loop and a mag loop has a great way of  nulling out noise. I had a comment on one of my ham radio condo posts from a gentlemen using a loop as a receive antenna and a separate but noisy transmit antenna.
Another product out there that I personally have not tried but a reader of my blog brought to my attention is the  CMC-130S-3k from My Antennas.
It’s a Common Mode Choke, RF Choke and RF Isolator all in one go to the link and have a look there is also a video of the unit in action.
Well there you have it some ideas on how to reduce or illuminate issues that may be giving you some grief in regards to close quarters ham radio. This is the final segment of Ham radio and the condo life. I hope you have enjoyed it and found some useful information.
