Irish Radio Amateurs Gain Secondary Allocation at 5.3 MHz:

eHam.net News — The Irish Radio Transmitters Society have just announced that Irish radio amateurs can use the WRC-15 band of 5.3515 MHz to 5.3665 MHz with immediate effect. No application is necessary and the power limit is 15 watts. This is very good news for anyone with an interest in the 60 metre band.

Welcome to wonderful world of QRSS/QRPP experimentation

Ham is all about experimentation. Last night I setup tiny beacon based on my CW keyer. The message is my call sign and locator. As a signal generator I am using old HP3336A synthesizer. The output level of 6dBm was enough to reach few km away.

Few photos and a screen capture from QRSS grabber are here.

Next step: operate HP3336 remotely to shift phases, transmitting some low PSK mode. What is lowest PSK “normally” used?

Is amateur radio a difficult/ intellectually demanding hobby?

My family has a good number of amateur radio enthusiast, I would love join the club, until I checked the exam that I have to pass in order to legally to become a radio amateur, it was super difficult, so many question regarding electronics, I felt so dumb while reading it. I don’t know if I can understand all those concepts, It seems like a very difficult hobby. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think everyone can master this hobby or you really have to study hours and hours in order to understand it.
