Follow up: I installed my TYT TH-9800 in my Nissan Titan today. Took advantage of the removable face and mounted it above my review mirror in an empty compartment. Bonus, it also holds my mic when I’m not using it! Main body is down by my driver’s seat.

Just finished Three Hundred Zeroes by Dennis R. Blanchard

http://ift.tt/1vYS9QM (you can also get a signed and commented copy like I did🙂 )

Three Hundred Zeroes is the story of an electronics engineer and amateur radio operator who hikes the Appalachian Trail Georgia to Maine and along the way he carries his KX1 to make CW contacts in every state he passes through (which he does successfully). It’s a great book and I’d highly recommend it to any AT enthusiasts out there.

UV-82 and APRSdroid

So I’m trying to use UV-82 and APRSdroid with an Audio Patch cable. I can TX just fine, but it appears my squelch isn’t clearing in time for incoming packets. Any settings I missed that I can adjust.

I’m trying a new radio soon. This thing has always had a ton of random noise, it could just be a bad radio.

Hesitant to start this amateur radio adventure…

I was looking at buying a BaoFeng UV-5R and getting a larger antenna to mainly listen to local police, radio, and fire bands as its weirdly interesting to me.

I also would like to use it for communication on hunting land and as possibly a SHTF radio to communicate with my family. I currently don’t plan on communicating with anyone else on the device. I plan on only using FMS/GMRS. I will get a license.

My concern is that a lot of what i am seeing online is illegal this and illegal that with FCC arresting you for the slightest error and constant posts about regular ham/cb being a “good ole boys” group and overall being jerks.

  • Are these rumors true about the ham/cb radio community?
  • Will i get raided for accidentally speaking on the wrong channels or speaking out of turn?
  • By just listening with my radio with its illegal antenna will i get tracked down by the FCC; fined, jailed, both?
  • Anything else i need to be aware of?

Maybe this sound overtly pussy of me but i prefer to be on the legal side of the law.

Does anyone have any experience with hamradioinsurance.com?

It sounds like a good deal but the reviews I have been seeing seem mixed. Has anyone here has to file a claim with them before?

Popular Las Vegas Repeaters

I am going to Vegas for a conference for a few days and am going to take my HT. I took a quick look at the Las Vegas section of the repeater directory and was met with several pages of options. There are far too many to try all of them so I am asking if anyone has any recommendations for any in particular where I can check in to a net or two or just say hi and make some local contacts. TIA & 73.

How Does One Start a Dstar Net?

So this is a spinoff of another post where I’ve complained about the content and quality of ragchews🙂. As a few Redditors have suggested, maybe I should show initiative and start a net.

I think the most reliable mode for me to start a net would be Dstar (I’m an Icom guy). This would allow people from all of the world to participate without having to deal with propagation issues. So my questions are:

Would I just choose a reflector and a time and announce it? Would I need permission from the reflector owner? Do reflectors even have “owners”? No idea what the protocols are or would be.

73,

HF Tech Net?

Waaaay back when, I had discovered almost by accident a net on 3938kHz, appropriately called the 3938 Tech Net. I listened to it a couple times, and then made a note to put the start time on my calendar so I could catch it in the future. As is often the case, life got in the way and I didn’t tune in for some time. Now when I’ve tuned in, it’s not there anymore, and to top it off I can’t seem to find that it ever existed so no information like “we’ve moved” or “we’re done here.”

Anyone know what happened to this net? Or alternatively, anyone know of a comparable net somewhere that discusses technical topics?

More QSLs from stations whose calls spell words – W2BEE, PA3BUD

Greg, W2BEE, writes, “TNX DAN–PSE ADD THIS TO UR COLLECTION OF CARDS FOR CALL SIGNS THAT SPELL WORDS!” As you can see, I already had his card, but I love the new card with the beautiful green landscape. This is actually my third “BEE” card. I also have one from W3BEE.

This is my second “BUD.” The first was from W8BUD.

I was given a Motorola UHF MTS2000 I (450-520MHz). Now what?

My uncle used to work for an airlines mostly loading luggage and prepping planes. He gave me his Motorola mts2000 that he used on the job.

I don’t know if this thing works. the battery is dated 2007 and hasn’t been charged in years, probably bad. I don’t have a charger either. Can I program it if I had the correct cables and software or does one need to be a vendor and own a $10k license to be able to program it?

Step 1, does it work? Is it worth buying a new battery and charger to find out?

Step 2, programming. I don’t know where to begin.

Weird signal at 1915. Has the rhythm of the Susuki violin piece “perpetual motion” and a certain tonality to it. Any ideas what this is?

Here is the violin song – not at the same tempo, but the rhythm sounds identical.

Here is the signal recording

If you’ve ever thought about using cheap so239 connectors to make ground planes… Don’t. Melting temp is a bit low.

Black Friday Deal… or, how I spent $600 on an HT

So Black Friday came and went. And of course, I had to check out all the sweet ham radio “deals” from the major ham radio stores.

Low and behold. The Kenwood TH-D74A was on sale for around $600. I really wasn’t looking at the D74A at first, but rather checked out the previous model (D72) which was advertised for close to $389.

However, my logic went – why get the old model when I can get the latest and greatest for only $200 more?

So yeah, I’m getting a $600 HT. Did I need it? No. But I think it will be fun to have.
