I am currently leasing a 2015 Honda Pilot, and I am thinking of installing a mobile 2m/440 rig. The units I am considering are all have a remote mounted display. I am looking for suggestions on how best to install the radio, display and antenna so as to limit damage/impact, in the event I decide to return the car after my lease it up. Thanks!

5N – Tom, PA3TG will be active again as 5N/PA3TG from Nigeria on 15-25
November. He will be QRV on 30 metres CW and 20 metres SSB & CW
mainly during his evening hours. QSL via home call, direct or

DL_ant – A couple of amateur radio operators will be working at the German
Antarctic station Neumayer III and be QRV in their spare time.
Felix, DL5XL will operate mainly CW and digital modes as DP1POL
(QSL via DL1ZBO, direct or bureau, and LoTW) from November through
February 2017; Daniel, DL1SU will be QRV as DP0GVN (QSL via DL5EBE)

DU – Tom, KC0W is active as 4I7COW [425DXN 1330] from the Philipppines
until 22 November. He operates CW only with a focus on 160 metres.

KH6 – Eric, KH6EB works on the uninhabited island of Kaho’olawe (OC-019)
for ten days every month, located at the base camp which supports
the state’s efforts to restore the island. He is there until 16
November, and will return on 12-21 December. During his free time
in the evenings and mornings (around 16-17 UTC, 3-5 UTC and 6-9
UTC), he is QRV on 20 metres SSB (14265 kHz), PSK31 (14070 kHz) and

T8 – JJ1DQR will be active again as T88QR from Koror (OC-009), Palau on
17-20 November. Last time he was there he operated SSB mainly on 20

TL – TL8TT is the callsign that the Italian DXpedition Team will be
using during their February 2017 DXpedition to the Central African
Republic (exact dates TBA). A team of seven (I1HJT, I2YSB, IK2CIO,
IK2CKR, IK2DIA, IK2HKT and JA3USA) will will operate CW and SSB on
160-10 metres, and RTTY on one band to be selected depending on
propagation. QSL via I2YSB. A band & mode survey can be found on

UA – Special event callsign R26MDXC well be activated on 14-30 November
to celebrate the 26th anniversary of the Miller DX Club of

V6 – The Nara DX Association’s V6J expedition to Mwokil Island (OC-226)
[425DXN 1325] has been postponed as the ship has been cancelled.
Nonetheless, the team will not give up, and will wait for the next

VK9N – Tim, NL8F (VK9NF) and Paula, NX1P will be active on 160-10 metres
from Norfolk Island (OC-005) from 22 November to 3 December. Tim
will operate SSB and JT65, while Paula will operate CW and RTTY;
she also plans to be active during the CQ WW DX CW Contest,
hopefully as VK9NX. QSL VK9NF via N7RO, QSL Paula’s operation via

VP2V – Look for VP2V/K2SX, VP2V/W1UU, VP2V/W2LK and VP2V/WA6O to be active
from Tortola, British Virgin Islands (NA-023) on 22-29 November.

VP8_ant- Once again Mike, GM0HCQ is active from onboard the Royal Research
Ship ‘James Clark Ross’. Whilst in Antarctic and Falkland Islands
waters he uses the call VP8CMH/mm, at all other times he uses
GM0HCQ/mm. The ship is due to arrive at Rothera Base on Adelaide
Island (AN-001), Antarctica on 27 November and depart on the 30th
(dates are subject to change), and if time allows Mike will be QRV
as VP8ROT. QSL for all callsigns via GM0HCQ (direct only), LoTW and

XW – Tony, KM0O will be active as XW0YO from Laos on 19-28 November. He
will operate CW and SSB on 160-10 metres, with main activity during

XZ – Zorro JH1AJT, Champ E21EIC, Franz, DJ9ZB and Madison W5MJ will be
active from Myanmar on 15-22 November (callsign TBA). Zorro’s main
purpose of this trip is to support the local Olympic and Paralympic
Committee. Activity will be on 80-10 metres CW, SSB and RTTY with
two stations, using two beams for 30-10 metres and wire verticals
for the other bands. QSL via JH1AJT; logsearch and OQRS on Club Log.

YB – Imam, YB4IR plans to be active as YB4IR/8 from the Lucipara Islands

on 18-20 November. They will be QRV on 40, 20 and 15 metres. QSL

ZD8 – Alan, K0AV will be active as ZD8V from Ascension Island (AF-003)
from 21 November to 1 December. He will operate mainly CW on 160-10
metres, and will participate in the CQ WW DX CW Contest as ZD8W

CARIBBEAN TRIP —> After several activations from various DX locations
during the year 2016, Martti, OH2BH & friends are going to the Caribbean.
V26BH will be QRV from Antigua on Martti’s birthday (19 November),
continuing with sporadic activity throughout the weekend. The party will
then move forward to Dominica, in order to participate in the CQ WW DX CW
Contest as J70BH. QSOs with V26BH and J70BH count for 5 points toward the
“BOTA 70 – Birthday On The Air” award.
“In addition to these on-air activities, HamSphere(R), the Virtual Amateur
Radio platform, will be introduced to the educational system of Dominica on
23 November. Under the group’s supervision, selected youth teams will
compete for speed and accuracy in an emergency communication drill dubbed
‘Haminica 2016’. The project is sponsored by Dominica’s National
Telecommunication Regulatory Commission. The other end of the traffic

EQUATORIAL GUINEA & ANNOBON —> KC0W’s future plans include DXpeditions to
both Equatorial Guinea (3C) and Annobon Island (3C0). “I will be traveling
to 3C land in December to personally submit all 20+ forms to their licensing
authorities”, Tom says. “These proposed 50-60 day long DXpeditions will
hopefully be QRV after I return to Equatorial Guinea a second time with all
of my gear in January”.

WRTC 2018 —> The official competition rules for the 2018 World Radiosport
Team Championship that will be held in Germany have been released and are

discussed the rules with potential competitors by e-mail as well as with the
WRTC Sanctioning Committee”, Uwe Koenneker (DL8OBF, Director of the WRTC
2018 Rules Committee) said. “Publishing the rules about 20 months before the
event gives potential competitors the chance to practice according to these

YOTA 2017 —> The 7th edition of Youngsters On The Air, hosted by the Radio
Society of Great Britain (RSGB), will be held on 5-12 August 2017 at Gilwell
Park, North London. Each IARU Region 1 member society is invited to take
part with a team (maximum four persons, three aged 15-25 years plus one team
leader). See the “Call for Applications” on either www.iaru-r1.org or

+ SILENT KEY + The doyen of French DXers, Ivan Pastre (F3AT) passed away on
8 November. He had turned 102 seven months ago. Active since the early
1930s, he favoured CW; he was fond of DX chasing and had 339/388 (current/
total) in the DXCC Mixed standings, and 338/354 in the DXCC CW standings.
While in Africa with the Air Force, he operated as FQ3AT from French
Equatorial Africa (Chad) and FE8AB from Cameroon in 1947-1948, and as FF8AG

I’ve been listening to shortwave for years, but know very little about transmitting. Which mode is best for both listening and transmitting on the 6 and 10 meter bands? (I know that NFM or FM is used for listening/transmitting voice on 2 meters. But what about these others?). Thank you.

My club’s been working on a remote control project for our APRS digipeater, and so I’ve written some utilities for APRS under Node.js. They’ve reached a point that they’re almost useful – please have a look.
Edit – I should probably point out that these utilities are focused on the RF side – i.e. using a TNC and a radio to exchange KISS frames over the air. If you’re looking to connect to the APRS-IS servers, these won’t help you much.

This is for anyone interested in trying out CW. Any and all are welcome, whether you can just barely send your callsign or guys running 60+WPM while making a sandwich. The idea is to make a nice safe place for Redditors (or others!) to hop on the air and try and make some QSOs using morse. New operators can call at whatever speed they are comfortable copying at, experienced operators please just try and work the new guys.
Frequency coordination will occur in IRC. We hang out in #redditnet on irc.geekshed.net (web client available in the yellow box on the right). This doesn’t act as a traditional net, but rather we move around between frequencies and bands as needed to give everyone a shot. Just pop into the channel and say “anyone want a CW QSO?” or something similar.
Check out the wiki for resources on learning CW. It doesn’t take a whole lot of time all at once, 5-15 minutes 2-3 times a day, every day.
If you’re member of SKCC (free!), FISTS (costs, but cheap), or any other group, you can try and send your numbers as well for the contacts to count towards their awards, and feel free to QSL to try and get the Reddit awards (see wiki).
If there are specific bands you’d like to try and work, give a yell here and we can work with you. Technicians are welcome and encouraged to exercise their CW privileges on the lower bands.

This is a reminder of tomorrow’s ‘630m activity night’. Highlights of the evening will see six different Canadian stations seeking contacts with other amateurs in North America via the ‘crossband mode’ as they call CQ on 630m CW but listen for replies on their announced (QSX) HF frequency. As well, there will be an increased level of on-air activity from many of the U.S. experimental stations, as they beacon or work each other on various modes including CW and JT9, the WSPR QSO-mode. The experimental stations are also seeking your reception reports.
More information may be found here regarding the activity night, including a detailed list of participating Canadians along with their respective transmitting and QSX HF listening frequencies.
As is often the case, old ‘Sol is threatening to throw some junk our way over the next day or two, right on time for our event but please don’t let that stop you from participating as often this can actually enhance propagation, especially on the north-south path.

AMSAT-UK and AMSAT-NL working with ISIS BV are delighted to announce that the FUNcube U/V transponder, on the 2U CubeSat QB50p1, has now been activated with a regular schedule.
Due to power budget constraints the transponder cannot be operational 24/7 and an orbit specific schedule has been developed. The transponder will commence operation 27 minutes after the spacecraft enters sunlight and will stay on for a period of 25 minutes. This schedule may be modified over the forthcoming weeks as a result of experience.
The transponder frequencies are:
Uplink: 435.047-435.077 MHz LSB
Downlink: 145.935-145.965 MHz USB
And the output power is approximately 400mW.
I’ve been waiting a long time for this one because up to now all I’ve been able to do with it is get QPSK packet telemetry from it. Now there’s yet another linear transponder to try out!

Mass production was key to survival during the Second World War. So much stuff was made that there continues to be volumes of new unpacked stuff left over and tons of used equipment for sale at reasonable prices. Availability of this war surplus provided experimenters in the mid 20th century with access to high performance test equipment, radio equipment, and high quality components for the first time. Even today this old stuff continues to motivate and inspire the young generations because of its high build quality, unique electro-mechanical approaches, and overall innovative designs which continue to be relevant into the 21st century. In this post we will show you how to get started in the hobby of resurrecting WW2 radio equipment and putting it back on the air. Many amateur radio operators became interested in the hobby after being given an old ARC-5 ‘command set’ receiver. These radios were typically used for communication between aircraft within a formation, hence the name ‘command set’. There are many different receivers and transmitters within this line covering frequency bands from 190 KHz to 146 MHz, most of which are capable of tuning in AM, CW, and SSB (by adjusting the BFO).

It’s not so much convincing somebody that we have this phenomenon; it’s more that if you bring another person in, that’s one more person who could alter something and it’s less controlled. So she made that decision [that] we just have to try and contain this as much as we can and control it as much as we can.”

Alright. So I figure i’m overlooking something. I have an Icom 7000 hooked up to an Astron 50 amp power supply when I Key the radio it shuts off immediately. Now when I run on batteries it transmits fine with no issues. Any help would be appreciated as I am stumped.

I live in an apartment and cannot bolt or screw anything into the house. However, we have a permanent AC unit on the 3rd floor near the roof. I was thinking of making a magnet mount on the AC and topping that off with 3 or 4 feet of mast (to get it over the roof line) with a 1/4 ground plane antenna on top.
I remember hearing that a reddit user built a homemade magnet mount with magnets epoxied to a floor flange. Does anyone have the details of this build or alternative ideas on how I could get this antenna mounted?
