Looking for some good cheap tablet suggestions for running amateur radio apps?
I’m interested in psk31 and other digital modes, SDR, rig control, APRS and satellite work.
Android or cheap Windows tablet preferred as I already have an iPad and am looking for something cheaper with more amateur apps.
Would rather not have to root, but will if needed.

So 40 years ago, I got my Novice license and soon thereafter got a Tech license. I learned radio the old school way, and my first station was a Hallicrafters SX-71 and a home build crystal CW rig made of of a surplus radio called a command set with a couple 807s for the final. I had a dozen 40 meter crystals and had a lot of fun– eventually I had a 2 meter radio, and built a lot of stuff.
The old Tech license was the General test with 5WPM code– in the intervening years the FCC has done away with the code, and said 20 years ago if you had one of the old Tech licenses you could upgrade to General.– I had the page out of a 1979 callbook, and went in today to a VE exam, and finally took care of it… I looked at the Extra questions the other day and besides the new laws and digital stuff I might just go take that exam next month.

That was a tough test. I just got my license my tech and general in September. This is a pretty good feeling. I wanted to thank everyone on Reddit and the Redditnet on IRC for helping me along the way.
I am at a tech class that I arranged for our Boy Scout troop to take. My son just passed his Tech too. It was really great to see him so happy. He said he wants to study for his General.
Everyone keep your fingers crossed that the other 4 boys and their dads pass the test when the class is over. I will keep you guys updated.

ARLB043 NCVEC Question Pool Committee Seeks Comments on the Technician Question Pool
The National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC) Question Pool Committee (QPC) is reviewing the 2014-2018 Technician question pool for revisions and updates. The QPC will accept comments and suggestions from the Amateur Radio community via e-mail through March 31, 2017 at, qpcinput@ncvec.org .
The NCVEC QPC will take all comments and suggestions into consideration as it updates the Technician question pool for 2018-2022. Input from the Amateur Radio community may include suggestions for new questions, changes to the topic areas, or changes to existing questions in any of the current Amateur Radio examination question pools.

The NCVEC is a not-for-profit voluntary association, with membership comprised of the various Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certified Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (VECs).
The NCVEC is a private organization, and functions to facilitate the intercommunications between the FCC and each VEC.
Each active VEC is invited to join the NCVEC, and actively participate. The NCVEC is governed by a body of elected officers consisting of a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. The 2015-2016 NCVEC officers are :

I’m currently a Technician operator, working on upgrading to General. However, I was thinking that since I study at a university that mainly focuses on STEM majors, there may be other students who could be interested in amateur radio. I’m thinking of starting a club, but I’m unsure if I should wait until I upgrade my license or just go right ahead and start now. Additionally, there aren’t any existing amateur radio clubs locally, as far as I know, so I must ask: what sort of activities are clubs generally expected to do? I was thinking of holding free courses to teach people what they need to know in order to pass the licensing examinations and get on air, as well as holding activities open to the general public to raise awareness of and generate interest in the hobby. I live in Puerto Rico, and we get many storms and hurricanes, so emcomm would be another cool thing to practice in the context of a club. Ideas?

I took about half the class I was supposed to for the tech license and studied out the book for the rest. Today was the test day, so I took it, passed, and they asked me if I wanted to take general while i was there. I figure why not, all I have to lose is time.
Passed with exactly the minimum score. Talk about squeaking in under the wire. Better study up what I missed before I get on Uncle Sam’s bad side though…

I have an ICOM IC-7300 that has a ground terminal on the back. Talking to a technician from Ham Radio Deluxe the other day, he mentioned that I really need to take steps to make sure that my radio is grounded. He had no suggestions about what to do in my situation (I live on a second floor condo) outside of running a counterpoise wire from the ground terminal along the floor for about 8 feet or so, which I did (but I have no idea as to whether this has made any difference).
Does anyone have opinions as to whether this will work and/or any other suggestions? Thank you in advance.

With the help of enthusiastic European ham radio operators, Aalborg University engineering students now have two-way communication with their home-built ESA-sponsored satellite AAUSAT5 that was sent into orbit around Earth from the International Space Station (ISS) on October 5. Initial problems communicating with the satellite from the control center in Aalborg made the team extra dependent on outside help. And there has been no shortage of help from well-placed ham operators further south in Europe.

The Amateur Radio activation of Anderson’s Mill at Smeaton in central Victoria in May has gone through its approval and logistic stages, with a clear go-ahead given by all to the project. The five-storey bluestone flour and oat mill, part of the 19th century gold field region, is on a creek that helped drive its iron water wheel. The Anderson’s Mill Heritage Weekend in 2017 will have Amateur Radio as part of the festivities. Anderson’s Mill is managed by Parks Victoria with the free public event supported by the Hepburn Shire Council and many others. The Mills on Air event run by the Denby Dale Radio Club, through the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, has had only European mills up to now, but that is about to change. The Central Goldfields Group VK3BI will be active the Anderson’s Mill on May 13 to 15, using 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m, 10m and VHF IRLP and UHF Echolink. Behind this ambitious project are locals Alan and Cheryl Just, and Peter Rafferty VK3CC. Now they invite more mills throughout Australia to join them on air in May.

Just curious what all the noise on 40M is the last couple days. I hear lots of crackle and popping going on. I confirmed with other locations via websdr and Im hearing the same thing on them. Anyone have ideas?
