Amateur Radio Group Dislikes 30-Foot Limit On Antennas:

eHam.net News — They’re required to refer to themselves as “amateurs,” but only because they’re absolutely prohibited from making any money from the hobby which is their passion. When several local ham radio operators took turns making comments to the Payette City Council at last week’s regular meeting of city government, the operators were quite comfortable explaining the technical details at the heart of their argument that Payette’s new ordinance regulating tower heights is too restrictive. From Julie Bunker, who holds a master’s degree in civil engineering and is president of the local radio operators group, to retired high school science teacher Jim Johnson, most commenters had credentials or professional backgrounds that suited them well to the conversation at hand. Payette passed Ordinance 1423 on Feb. 21. The ordinance creates a new code section establishing, for the first time, maximum building heights within the city’s various zoning designations, and also limiting structures to taking up no more than 80 percent of a lot’s area. Of greater interest to radio operators, though, is the ordinance’s inclusion of a new code chapter: “Wireless facility, spires, poles, antenna steeples, towers and other such structures.”
