Sunspots have polarity (think of a bar magnet with its north and south poles). Most often, sunspots groups are bibolar, with regions of north and south polarity. Interactions within magnetic regions may result in sudden release of energy, the solar flare.

Solar flares are powerful explosions of magnetic energy in sunspot groups. X-ray flares can be observed using Hydrogen-Alpha filters on optical telescopes. X-ray flares originate in the solar chromosphere, and Hydrogen-Alpha filters see this.
