Did you know? Here’s a space weather and radio propagation educational tidbit – from http://SunSpotWatch.com – at 14:00 UTC on 2017-03-01:

A geomagnetic storm sequence: 1) increase in the solar wind pressure initially compresses the magnetosphere. 2) the solar wind magnetic field will interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. 3) Solar wind/IMF energy is transferred into magnetosphere. These interactions cause an increase in movement of plasma through the magnetosphere.

Geomagnetic-storm plasma movement is driven by: (1) increased electric fields inside the magnetosphere, and, (2) an increase in electric current in the magnetosphere and ionosphere.

The frequency of geomagnetic storms increases and decreases with the Sunspot cycle.
