Auroral activity can produce several different types of phenomena, all of which can influence radio communications (namely, on shortwave radio frequencies). That’s because auroral-enhanced ionization can absorb radio signals: this is known as ‘auroral absorption’ (AA).

Auroral absorption (AA) is a widely varying, almost completely unpredictable consequence of auroral activity. They can fluctuate widely both in time and space. Maximum occurrence of AA appears to be just equatorward of the maximum level of visible auroral activity. Auroral absorption (AA) maximizes in mid-morning at a fixed location. Auroral absorption (AA) produces very poor to useless propagation between 2 points on a transauroral radio circuit.
