Ham Operators Key In Emergencies:

Noel Bannister recalls when a tornado hit Tuscumbia a couple of years ago. The tornado was a surprise. It had not been on the radar, but suddenly spun up and landed, then continued down Woodward Avenue and Second Street in Muscle Shoals. That is an example of when amateur radio operators can provide immediate information, letting emergency officials know where the tornado has hit and the path it is on. "Folks in the line of the storm can know," said Bannister, president of the Muscle Shoals Amateur Radio Club. While being a ham radio operator can be an entertaining hobby, operators like those in the Muscle Shoals club also play a vital role in emergency situations. Their ability to quickly relay information to one another, as well as to emergency management agencies and the National Weather Service, helps provide real-time information.
