VERNON TOWNSHIP -- A Roche Park baseball field was transformed into a communications hub over the weekend as amateur radio operators competed against teams from around the country to make contact with as many other operators as possible. "November-three-Quebec-Quebec-hotel," Connor Fell said as he hunched over a large microphone at one of three communication stations within an enormous tent that had the feel of a military installation combined with a 911 call center. Fell, a member of the Crawford Amateur Radio Society, was seated alongside CARS President James Tolbert. With Fell operating the receiver and Tolbert seated in front of a laptop computer, the two men rapidly made contact with fellow operators, first one in Vermont followed by another in Virginia. The 24-hour Amateur Radio Field Day took place Saturday and Sunday, with more than 25 members of the society manning multiple radios. More than 35,000 radio operators from around the country were expected to participate in the annual event, which helps competitors prepare for emergencies and promote amateur radio as a hobby.
