Schofield Radio Club Dials Up Another National Win:

eHam.net News — Broadcast the news: Schofield Middle School’s Amateur Radio Club placed first nationally in the middle school category in the annual American Radio Relay League School Club Round Up. Youngsters’ GB16YOTA On the Air:

eHam.net News — Every December, the IARU organises Youngsters on the Air (YOTA) month, which is a month-long activity specifically aimed at getting young people operating amateur radio. It is not a contest but there is an award to chase. The UK station, GB16YOTA, will be put on the air by Sandringham School ARC on 1 December, Sidmouth ARS on 2 December, and by Durham and District ARS on the 3rd. Worcester RAA will be operating the call sign on the 4th. If young amateurs cannot get to these stations to take part, they can still join in by working as many YOTA stations as they can during December.

Having trouble finding people. Please help!

I just got my radio (Baofeng UV80HP) and I will be taking my technician and general tests this weekend. I am confident that I will pass both. Until then, I’ve been trying to scan frequencies to listen to other people so I can start familiarizing myself with lingo, procedures, etc… However, I can’t seem to find anybody! I haven’t touched any settings on my radio besides lowering the squelch. I looked at a band plan, and what frequencies should be in use, for example 140-148 Mhz. I have been going from one frequency to the next, and also scanning them with a low squelch. I haven’t heard a single voice yet, and even if I punch in the frequency of my local police or fire I hear nothing. What am I doing wrong? I am located in west Los Angeles by the way…so maybe you can recommend some frequencies for me to try listening to?
