How do I properly “Test” if my radio is working?

I have a Baofeng UV-5r and an RTL-SDR.I just want to make sure that my radio is working alright by transmitting on a certain frequency and seeing if my transmission properly appears on the waterfall chart on the SDR.What should I transmit on the frequencies as I am pressing the PTT? Like, along the lines of “[CALLSIGN] Equipment Test [Callsign]”? I remember there was something about this as I was studying to pass the exam, but now I have forgotten.

Question on particular Radio type/possibility

I have done a little research but I’ve found it difficult since I don’t know what terms or vocabulary to use that would get an answer to my question without a more descriptive way of asking, so I have come to visit here in the hope of gaining some knowledge

I have been looking into getting an intercom style set up for a motorcycle “group” of around 3-4 people, and found that the usually used bluetooth intercom systems that have more than 2 person connectivity are super expensive so I have moved onto considering a radio set up on each bike. Now the main question is is there a mobile radio set up or type that has the ability to act almost like a phone? As in: if you are receiving from one person in the group who is broadcasting to everyone, you can start transmitting at the same time and successfully broadcast to the group also?

The only info I’ve found so far is from this website in the “Commerical Two Way Radios” section saying:

An example of a two way radio that both transmits and receives at the same time (or full-duplex) is a mobile phone or cellular telephone, which uses two different radio frequencies to carry the two directions of the conversation simultaneously.

Is that just telling me to use a cell phone instead? That’s what I don’t want.

Any education / advice / suggestions / help / “BUY THIS ONE” is much appreciated

Recommendation for a high quality SW/AM/AF receiver with antenna setup ?

Hello,

I’m interested in a high quality AM/FM/SHORTWAVE reciever that can also recieve police and military broadcasts for 100 miles +. I posted on here a while back but was recommended a relatively low quality reciever. I’m interested in something that can hook up to an external antenna so I can obtain transmissions from long distances.

If you could post a link to a reciever with an accompanying antenna I would be super grateful.

Thank you for your input.

BTW – It’s VERY hard to find relievle information on radios outside of communities like this. I tried going to a number of places and the employees looked at me like I had 2 heads when I asked for a shorwave reciever.

Does anyone make an adapter of sorts to use this antenna on a panel mount of sorts?

This is the antenna in question. It’s off of a portable CB, it’s telescopic and extends to 4~ feet. I’d like to use it In a small Custom CB/battery/amfm box that currently uses a 4 foot CB antenna screwed into one of These mounts.

On the other hand if anyone knows a better (while still cheap) way to get a Telescopic CB antenna?

Easy D-STAR hotspot setup?

I’ll be getting my ID-51a handheld in a few days and I just want to have a backup plan in place incase I cannot reach any D-STAR repeaters near me, especially since I will be indoors. I have heard about people setting up D-STAR hotspots in their home, but they all seem sort of complicated and you need to get a Raspberry PI along with some other things. Is there a single thing that I can buy that is super easy to set up in my apartment that will allow me to access D-STAR even if I’m not near a repeater?

Grounding my shack

Ok so Im at a lost for grounding and what not?

Once I have all my radios, antennas, coax, powersupplys, etc. Do I have to ground all this with copper wires and a ground rod? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Antenna Upgrade for Icom V80?

Just got my license (pending posting in the FCC database) and a friend who’s involved gave me a V80 (2m, single band) he wasn’t using. It’s got the stock rubber duck antenna on it. Would it be worth putting a better handheld antenna on it? What would be a better antenna?

Just some basic searching and I was looking at the Diamond RH205 as an option.
