BITS & PIECES -

FT5ZM Press Release - September 10, 2013
By Ralph Fedor, K0IR
The Amsterdam Island DXpedition team's progress continues unabated. Essentially
all the team's equipment is now in hand and at the Atlanta staging area or
undergoing final testing in preparation for shipment to Atlanta. Gear will soon
be sorted into contents bound for the Mataf operating location and the Antonelli
operating location (see our website page:
There will be no guess work about what piece of equipment goes to which site
when we land. Efficiency means more time on the air and more QSO's. Bob, N2OO,
has been working on our maritime mobile operation to provide QSO's with some
rare grids between Australia and Amsterdam Island. Arnie, N6HC, is our team
doctor and has finalized his medical resources. Jerry, WB9Z, has been hard at
work with his team cutting radials and coax, thousands of feet of each, but the
job is now done.
Bob, K4UEE, our chief financial officer has been watching our income and
expenses and trying to be as frugal as possible without compromising our ability
to generate lots of QSO's. Craig, K9CT, has been putting our K3's and bandpass
filters through extensive testing and has worked with Neil, VA7DX; Gregg, W6IZT;
and George, N4GRN, on our network and logging protocol. Erling, LA6VM, and
Andy, UA3AB, have been working hard to inform Europeans of our progress and peak
their interest, while VE7CT beats the drum in Canada. Michel, FM5CD, has worked
closely with the French authorities, answering their questions and Nodir, EY8MM,
has focused on our low band capabilities. Jorge, HK1R, has worked hard to
generate interest in South America.

Celebrate the First Radio Transmissions from Great Britain to New Zealand -
On 18th October 1924, the first radio communication contact between the UK and
New Zealand took place between 2SZ at Mill Hill School, the station operated by
Cecil Goyder, and 4AA in Shag Valley, South Island, New Zealand, operated by
Frank Bell.
The Radio Society of Great Britain, in partnership with groups of UK Amateurs in
the UK and New Zealand, invites participation in celebration of the 90th
anniversary of this event in October 2014 by recreating that original contact
between the UK and New Zealand on the 80m band. For 2013, there will be activity
preparing for the celebrations in 2014 and the special call GB2NZ will be active
to stimulate the interest in celebrating the event from 5th to 25th October
2013.
It is suggested that those with suitably equipped stations might like to join in
the "dry run" tests in October 2013 on 80m. Others may like to make contacts
with New Zealand amateurs on the HF bands.
Elsewhere on this website (gb2nz.com/), you will find predicted propagation
between the UK and New Zealand for 18th October 2013. Either side of this date,
the propagation will generally follow the same pattern.
Contacts on both CW and SSB are encouraged and GB2NZ will be active on both
modes, on 80m when there is propagation but otherwise on other HF bands.

Greek Telegraphy Club is happy to announce the conduct of the 3rd Greek
Telegraphy Club CW Cup, which will be held on Saturday, 05 October 2013 -
12:00UTC until Sunday, 06 October 2013 - 12:00UTC.
It is the first international event organized by the G.T.C. and we consider it
to be a joyful event.
The planning of the 3rd G.T.C. CW Cup was done, having in mind the ideals and
purpose of the G.T.C., primarily instituted by the late and beloved SV1NA,
George.

YB3MM FUTURE EXPEDITIONS
Adhi wants to gauge the interest and demand for OC-262 He plans on operating
from Sebesi Island (new point for Nusantara Indonesian Islands Award). The last
time 262 was active as YE5A Pulau Pisang.
OC-186 Karimunjawa He plans to operate from a different island in the same
group: Pulau Menjangan Besar. Earlier this year he was there but only made a
hundred or so QSO with JA and EU.
His last two solo island expeditions were OC-166 1450 QSO and OC-217 Saobi
Island (Kangean Group) 1550 QSO.
I will relay to Adhi, or maybe he will read this forum himself. A more serious
group expedition will be planned next year hopefully to Banda OC-157 and
Masalembu OC-250.

ZL, NEW ZEALAND
Press Release #1
After World War 1 and with the banishment of radio amateurs to the supposedly
"useless shorter wavelengths" an amazing period of radio exploration took place.
Amateurs all over the globe soon learnt that far from being useless these
wavelengths seem to allow communication over long distances. Amateurs in ZL
were at the forefront of this activity with the first ZL to VK QSO in April
1923, and then world record distance QSOs between ZL and Argentina in May 1924,
ZL and California in September 1924, ZL and Connecticut on the US east coast
just weeks later, and the ultimate Z4AA Frank Bell's QSO with Cecil Goyder G2SZ
in London on 18 October 1924.
To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the record breaking activities of these
early pioneers of Amateur Radio, ZM90DX will be on the air between 1 October
2013 and 31 October 2014 on all bands 1.8 MHz to 1.2 GHz and beyond in all
modes. Activated by the Kiwi DX Group, an informal group of DXers and contest
enthusiasts, ZM90DX will be used around New Zealand and a special commemorative
QSL card will be available as well as an award program for contacts with ZL
during this period.
Not only will ZM90DX be active at expected times and on expected bands, but in
the spirit of those early pioneers the ZM90DX operators will also be calling CQ
on bands and in directions one may not necessarily expect with the intention of
exploring the boundaries of radio propagation.
This will be an unparalleled opportunity for Amateurs all over the world to work
ZL while celebrating the exploits of those early trail blazers whose work paved
the way for radio communications as we know it today.
Further details can be found on http://www.zm90dx.com/.
Note: "Please remember this is a ZL based activity NOT ZL9 Campbell & Auckland
Islands".
ENSURE your logging software logs ZM90DX correctly as ZL and NOT ZL9, Auckland /
Campbell Islands
