Levels of magnetic disturbances are higher in the higher latitude regions, so K-index scales are adjusted there. All stations scale their measurements so that their K-index values fall within the 0 to 9 range.
For geomagnetic activity, the K range used, from zero (0) to nine (9), defines the level of activity observed, from dead-quiet (0), to extremely disturbed (9). The K-index is a quasi-logarithmic scale, and is open-ended; each observatory uses a look-up table for their specific location. In other words, the scale is adjusted to “fit” the local activity range, which might be different from the range at some other location. Finally, the Planetary K-index (Kp) values for a 3-hour interval r obtained by computing mean of all current K-indices.
The Geomagnetic A-Index: this indice is based on the K-index. It is based on the average of the eight ak-indices for that UTC day. For example, eight K-indices given as “3445 4332” would correspond to an A-index of (avg, rounded) 23.
