Unsuccessful with SDR and HF bands

Hello All,

So I just got into amateur radio when I bought a UV-5r. While I’m looking into getting my license I decided to venture into the SDR realm.

So I bought a dongle from rtl-sdr.com and a “Ham It Up” Up converter. Messed around with ADS-B but really wanted to listen in on the HF bands.

So I got SDR# running. Tuned into some FM stations, and thats about as far as I got. I made sure to put in the shift ( -125,000,000 ) for the converter. I was hoping to catch WWV some where out there, but i get nothing.

I know the antennas that came with the kit are not meant for HF so I made a crappy fan dipole for 10M and 6M to get started. Now I didn’t expect to see much but I haven’t came across anything.

The antenna is not in an ideal location taped to the ceiling in my cave. I hope to be putting up a more robust dipole in my attic once I get some time. Even with the crappy one I was hoping to hear something.

Anyone think of anything I’m missing?

Inverted, inverted L for 80/40?

Last week I put up a 40m vertical on a guyed mast, idea is to end feed it at the roof line and lay out elevated radials , mostly pulled to the adjacent fence and laying on the metal roof, as many tuned length as possible.

I let the wire run long at the bottom, giving me about 10′ extra that I can run to the fence as well, coming out with the radials at close to horizontal.

If this wire runs parallel to and near the radials, will this negatively affect the performance of the antenna as a whole? Cebik speaks of an “erect L”, not sure if this is what he means. The goal is to have an effective antenna for 75m, most of my operating being at night.

AMBE3000

In prep for the eventual Arduino upgrade to support DMR, I bought one of these AMBE3000 Arduino shields with the free LF audio board.
After soldering together the LF audio board, it sat on my desk for a few weeks as I had other things to do.

This past weekend I got time to actually figure out how to use it on DSTAR in order to test to make sure it’s working for when the DMR upgrade software/firmware is released.

So far so good. It works well on DSTAR even if the whole thing is a little clunky requiring 3 different windows to be open and running in order to use and control it.

AMBE3000 assembled and working.

Overview of the complete hardware to include external speaker and microphone.
That’s actually not a bad speaker at all. No crackling and I think it cost me a total of $10 years ago.

The three programs that musty be running for it to work on DSTAR.
NOTE: You just install and configure D-STAR Repeater and ircDDBGateway for Windows. The Remote Control program itself is part of the ircDDBGateway package.
And yes, that’s the Frankfurt, Germany skyline at night. I lived in that area for over a decade. I miss it so much.

This weekend I was listening to both the DMR TAC 310 net and the D-Star International Net at the same time and D-STAR audio sounded atrocious next to DMR.
Of course, if you dig down into the specs of both digital modes you’ll quickly see why…

How To Make My Mic Work With My Rig?

I have a KX2, and I use the built-in mic as of right now. I really want to find a way to use my Icom HM-186LS with it because I love the mic. How can I use them together, since the Icom HM has dual adapters for SP/Mic and it doesn’t line up with the jacks on the KX2.

Earphone/microphone for HT

I performed my first public service work yesterday by helping to provide communications for a local parade. I brought a pair of my favorite earphones that I use with my iPhone when listening to music, etc. This, at least, helped me hear. But I still needed to unclip the radio from my belt to talk into the mic on the HT.

I have an Icom ID-51A Plus HT. As is typical of Icom, their accessory prices are quite high. Does anyone have a recommendation for an earphone/mic/PTT combo that works well and is more reasonable in price? If I were doing this frequently I’d just buy the Icom and be done with it. But I’m likely to use this maybe 6 times a year.

I would be interested in either lapel mics or a mic in the earphone. I don’t want a boom mic for 2m on HT use.

Thank you for any advice you may have!

CME impact possible on Nov. 8th

On November 5th, a magnetic filament on the sun became unstable and erupted.

The blast opened a fiery canyon in the sun’s atmosphere and hurled a CME toward Earth.

According to NOAA models, the plasma cloud could strike Earth’s magnetic field on November 8th, triggering G1-class geomagnetic storms and auroras around the poles.

How to get multiple programmable radios to talk to eachother?

Hi,

I am looking to create a small network of the Leixen Note 25 watt handhelds. (I am not changing radio models so please do not suggest that) and a small mobile unit which is 25w as well. Each is programmable so how do I get all of them to talk to eachother without changing channels? Thanks

Radio Club to Commemorate National Parks Anniversary:

This year, amateur radio operators throughout the United States have helped commemorate the first 100 years of the National Park Service. Clubs pack up their antennas, radios and source of power and head for historically significant sites where they will set up their equipment to reach out to hundreds of other radio operators. The Cleveland Amateur Radio Club will conduct its final public demonstration on Saturday, November 12 as part of the American Radio Relay League’s “National Parks on the Air” program. During these events, amateur radio operators or “hams” as they are more commonly known, attempt to contact as many units in the national parks system as possible from their home locations. The overall goal for hams at the parks is to contact as many U.S. states and territories as possible. The activity returns the CARC to the Blythe Ferry Removal Memorial Park in Birchwood; a federally recognized site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. This marks the club’s third activation as the Trail of Tears as part of the year-long event. The Club’s October demonstration at Red Clay State Historic Park saw 10 member participants interacting with park visitors, and six radio operators communicating by voice and Morse code to amateurs throughout the country.
