Unsuccessful with SDR and HF bands

Hello All,

So I just got into amateur radio when I bought a UV-5r. While I’m looking into getting my license I decided to venture into the SDR realm.

So I bought a dongle from rtl-sdr.com and a “Ham It Up” Up converter. Messed around with ADS-B but really wanted to listen in on the HF bands.

So I got SDR# running. Tuned into some FM stations, and thats about as far as I got. I made sure to put in the shift ( -125,000,000 ) for the converter. I was hoping to catch WWV some where out there, but i get nothing.

I know the antennas that came with the kit are not meant for HF so I made a crappy fan dipole for 10M and 6M to get started. Now I didn’t expect to see much but I haven’t came across anything.

The antenna is not in an ideal location taped to the ceiling in my cave. I hope to be putting up a more robust dipole in my attic once I get some time. Even with the crappy one I was hoping to hear something.

Anyone think of anything I’m missing?
