Alice Springs played a vital role in linking Australia to the world 145 years ago, when the 3,200km Overland Telegraph line was completed by Charles Todd. South Australian and Northern Territory Morsecode Fraternity president Laurie Wallace has been passionate about Morse code all his life. But the dots and dashes did not stop there. They continued through to Singapore and India and then to the Gibraltar, finishing the journey in London, England. "This was the beginning of speedy communication. Samuel Breese Morse invented the electric telegraph. It was just simply two signals, short and long," Mr Wallace said.
