SWANSBORO -- A group of communication enthusiasts who assist authorities when natural disasters strike participated recently in a friendly, world-wide competition in Swansboro. Members from the Onslow Amateur Radio Club -- a 60-member body -- gathered at the Swansboro Soccer Complex off Hammocks Beach Road on June 24 to partake in the American Radio Relay League Field Day, a 24-hour period held annually on the fourth June weekend where more than 35,000 amateur radio take to the airwaves and attempt to make as many on-air contacts. bThese amateur radio operators -- affectionately referred to as "Ham Radio" operators -- are a strong group that use this event to make "radio friends" around the world but more importantly the occasion brings awareness to their hobby and helps operators hone their radio skills that may prove vital in times of needs when their community is threatened by mayhem, both natural and man-made.
