Many thanks to SWLing Post reader and author, DM Barrett (N4ECW), who recently shared the following press release which features his latest book:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EQUINOX Blends Science Fiction And Amateur Radio

1 May 2019 (Tampa, Florida)
A new science fiction narrative, EQUINOX, has taken amateur and shortwave radio into the cultural mainstream in its version of a limited alien invasion story line.
“It’s been quite a while since the world depended on amateur and shortwave radio as lifelines. In EQUINOX, both are critical for the success of The Resistance.” – DM Barrett, EQUINOX author
DM Barrett, callsign N4ECW, lives and breathes amateur radio. He is well known in the ham radio community having developed and manufactured several different specialized radio antennas through his former company, Transworld Antennas.  He holds two earned doctorates with majors in law, economics, and religion.
The EQUINOX story line begins on a warm, slightly breezy day on Florida’s east coast as the vernal equinox marked the beginning of spring.  Suddenly, there was a thunderous crash, a blinding light, and a vortex swirling in the blue Atlantic. The invading alien army arrived. The world surrendered. The Resistance made a stand.
When the science fiction novel was recently released as a Kindle Unlimited eBook, it moved steadily into Amazon’s top ten science fiction eBooks in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and Australia.  After only a few days, the paperback version of EQUINOX was ranked in Amazon’s top third for science fiction paperbacks.
DM Barrett may be contacted at DMBarrettPHD@aol.com or by text to 931-239-3760.
EQUINOX and other books by DM Barrett can be ordered online through Kindle, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.
If you are a radio amateur or shortwave enthusiast, or you are just interested in the topics, don’t miss the chance to join others that are enjoying the science fiction novel, EQUINOX.
I have been sent a paperback preview copy of Equinox and plan to read it in the coming weeks.
Equinox can be purchased from the following retailers:
Also, the author notified me that there are a limited number of paperback copies available on eBay for $14.95. These copies are a First Printing and are autographed by the author. Click here to view on eBay.

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Christian, who writes:
Hi Thomas. I know both of these deals have been posted already but just to let readers know that both the Eton Exec Traveller and Exec Satellite are still available on Amazon and the prices are both at historic lows.
Right now the Satellite is $91.13 (shipped) and the Traveler $38.00 (shipped). Oddly the older non-Exec version of the Traveler is $56 and the non-Exec version of the Satellite is $189! Don’t accidentally order one of those models. The Eton Field BT is also $79.99 shipped…quite the value.
As others have mentioned here I think Eton may be liquidating their shortwave radio stock. Hope they’ll be replaced with something else.
Thanks for the heads-up, Christian–I appreciate your updates. I’m curious if you or other readers have noticed lower Eton prices on other sites as well. I have not.
Here are links to the models on sale at Amazon. Note that these are Amazon affiliate links–purchasing via these links supports the SWLing Post at no cost to you:

Yet another Space Weather note and how Space Weather and radio are intersecting yet again – yesterday & today!  Yesterday Thomas Ashcraft – mentioned recently in this postrecorded the outbursts.
From http://spaceweather.com
INTENSE SOLAR RADIO BURSTS: Big sunspot AR2740 is turning toward Earth and emitting loud bursts of shortwave radio static. A remarkable outburst yesterday was rare in both its form and intensity, exceeding even what observers have detected during Solar Maximum …
UPDATE: Rob Stammes of Lofoten, Norway, has detected even more bursts on May 7th. The sun continues to be “radio-active.”

DXER ham radio news

About a month ago I received a new morse code key, the 9A5N solid state CW paddle. I chose the all black twin lever model and from the get go Neno 9A5N was in contact with me. The paddle arrived from Croatia within 3 weeks of me ordering it. Most of the 3 weeks was the key being slowly moved through Canadian customs or it would had been here sooner. It was very well packaged and Neno advises that you keep the shipping box if ever you need to store the key for a move. The uniqueness of the solid state paddle are:

- No moving parts to ware or make a clicking noise.
- You just turn it off when not in use so no accidental dit’s or dahs sent when inadvertently touching    the paddle.
- There is not maintenance (other than changing the batteries) no periodic mechanical adjustments.
- If you have owned a iambic key there really is no learning curve just turn in on and away you go.

The only adjustment that you may want to do is adjust the touch sensitivity with the key factory set at 10 grams and adjustable to 50 grams in 5 gram steps. Seeing this is a touch paddle depending on your “touch” you may want to increase or decrease the sensitivity. I seemed to be happy with were it was factory set to at 10 grams.
The nice thing about this paddle is it’s not bang your head on the wall menu driven. What I mean by this is I have owned ham radio electronic devices that can drive you crazy with long and short holds of buttons and or combination button holds. Then there was the count the short and long beeps and so on. With the 9A5N paddle to adjust the sensitivity you simply turn the paddle on, then hold the on/off button in the on position until you are greeted with 3 LED blinks now release the button and your ready to adjust. Then simply touch the left paddle to increase and right to decrease. If you hit the top end (50 grams) or bottom end (10 grams) the LED will blink 3 times to let you know. To save and try a new stetting either wait 15 seconds or push the power button once.
The only other menu change you can do is place the keyer in contest mode and what this means is the keyer will not time out and turn off on you. Normally If you forget to turn the paddle off it will do so after 40 minutes of non operation.
To enter contest mode make sure the key is off then push and hold the on button until the LED flashes then release the button. So in a nut shell to adjust the key paddle touch sensitivity start with the key turned on and hold the power button. To put the key in contest mode (meaning it will not turn off on it’s own) start with the key off and hold the power button.
The key is very well made and the base is 1.8 kilo’s so it’s not going anywhere on your desk as you use it.
The last item I wanted to mention was yes it does take batteries (2 AAA) according to Neno’s instructions the battery life should be up to 800 operating hours. The blue LED which is on during operation will indicate low battery life when it gets dim. So you do have an indication when its time to change out the batteries. Finally the paddle is warrantied for 24 months from date of purchase.

DXER ham radio news

Many thanks to a number of SWLing Post readers who’ve contacted me regarding the ongoing issues with WiFi radios that rely on the Frontier Silicon/vTuner aggregator partnership. Two days ago, we mentioned this in a post about the service outage that affected Sangean and Como Audio WiFi radio devices.
Turns out, the outage was a sign of deeper troubles that will affect any Internet radio device using the Frontier Silicon aggregator. I know that at least Sangean and Como Audio use the service, but I image there are many more, especially in some automobiles. Indeed, this might also affect devices which use the vTuner service.
At present, I am unable to use my Como Audio Solo or the Sangean WFR-28 WiFi radio. Both require re-saving all of the presets.
Sangean posted a short message on their devices yesterday. Dennis Dura notes:
I have the Sangean WFR-28 and just came home to find a message on every preset saying “due to recent changes to our internet radio service, you will need to save your presents again”.
Not only that, but many of the menus of the radio have changed.
And most bizarre, in the Genre setting, they have eliminated “Jazz” as a category, and have added many I’ve never before or heard off. How does a company eliminate a category that is understood across the world?
Como Audio actually sent an email message regarding the lapse of service yesterday evening.
The Como Audio message described, in some detail, what had actually taken place. Much of Como’s message was based on the following message Frontier Silicon posted on their website:

Why did the service change on 7th May 2019?

On 1st May 2019 we experienced a major outage of the Internet Radio & Podcast service used by our customers’ Internet Radio devices. This was caused by issues with a third-party service provider that were outside our control.  The service provider has also informed us that they are unable to ensure service provision beyond week commencing 6th May.  Any such failure to provide the service would have caused the Internet Radio functionality on all our customers’ devices to stop working unless we had taken this remedial action.
As a result, we have made some changes to the way the service is delivered, and you may notice the following changes:
  • We have deployed a replacement service, and configured all devices to use it.  It may take several hours for your device to see the new service.  Older devices may need to be powered off and back on again to force them to see the new service.
  • We are using a new provider for the Internet Radio and Podcast directory.  You may discover some new stations and podcasts that were not previously available, and you may find some stations and podcasts are missing.  If you notice a station or podcast that you think is missing from the database then please raise a support ticket and we will aim to get it added within 2 business days.
  • You may see some slight changes to the menu structure on your devices due to the change of provider.
  • The previous customer portal is no longer available, and so you can no longer use it to add your own stations.  If you would like a station adding to the database then please raise a support ticket and we will aim to get it added within 2 business days.
  • It is no longer possible to recall Favourites.  Depending on your device, we recommend using the Device Presets or Last Listened functionality to recall your favourite stations instead.
  • Any Device Presets that you have previously saved will no longer work and so you will need to resave them.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of these changes, which we have made in order to provide continuity of service for customers and users.  This is a large and complex migration and whilst we have tested and rehearsed this scenario in advance there may be an initial period of reduced service stability.  We will be monitoring the service closely during this time and will communicate any issues via the status page at https://status.frontiersmart.com/.
If you have any further comments or questions about the service then please browse the Knowledge Base, and submit a support ticket if you cannot find the information you are looking for.
Of course, we all know that the “third party” is the vTuner aggregator. I’m curious who Frontier Silicon will use now as an aggregator, or if they’ll self-host the database.
A number of readers have reported issues saving their front panel presets and other favorites. My guess is that this functionality will return after the new service is fully implemented. I also assume Frontier Silicon could implement any missing music genres (like the Jazz genre Dennis mentioned). At least, I hope so.
One thing we’ve learned is how very little is actually stored locally in these WiFi radios. It seems everything down to the front panel presets rely on the aggregator functioning properly.
If you have one of the affected WiFi radios, please comment about your experience getting it back online and loaded with station presets. Please report any quirks you encounter during the process. I’ve gotten mixed reports about the Como and Sangean mobile phone applications working properly.
I shall now go about re-saving all of the presets in my family’s WiFi radios.

“A recent article in The New York Times reported that many garage door openers and keyless vehicle entry fobs in an Ohio town near Cleveland mysteriously stopped working. While the article invoked The X-Files and hinted initially that a NASA research center somehow could be involved, the cause was not so much mystifying as arcane.
“Garage door repair people, local ham radio enthusiasts, and other volunteer investigators descended on the neighborhood with various meters,” the May 4 article by Heather Murphy recounted. “Everyone agreed that something powerful was interfering with the radio frequency that many fobs rely on, but no one could identify the source.”
More than a dozen residents reported intermittent issues getting their key fobs and garage door openers to operate, and most lived within a few blocks of each other. At one point, the local power utility started shutting off power to areas where the strongest RF signal was detected, but the signal persisted. Dan Dalessandro, WB8ZQH, a TV repairer, was among several hams who investigated. He initially picked up “little blips” on a signal detector, but finally, on one block and at a particular house, the signal was quite loud.
“The source of the problem was a homebrew, battery-operated device designed by a local resident to alert him if someone was upstairs when he was working in his basement,” the Times reported. “It did so by turning off a light.” The individual, who, the article said, has special needs, was not identified for privacy concerns. The inventor, who had no malicious intent, had no inkling that his device was wreaking havoc on the neighborhood until a North Olmstead City Council member and a volunteer knocked on his door. The device operated on 315 MHz, the frequency many keyless-entry devices use under FCC Part 15 rules. The device’s battery was removed, the signal stopped, and all who were involved breathed sighs of relief”

Why choose the 6BS-270 antenna versus a traditional Yagui?
· Elements of full wavelength, reaching maximum efficiency in TX / RX.
· Optimized design.
· More gain in less boom length than a traditional Yagi.
· Very low noise, which will allow you to improve the reception of low signals in urban environments.
· Extraordinary F/R and F/B.
· Very small turning radius, ideal for small spaces.
· Heavy-Duty construction with high quality materials for extreme durability.
The best directional antenna option for the DX in urban environments, in times when QRM in cities is increasingly high, a closed antenna is the definitive solution to improve DX reception.

One-hour FT4 “practice contest” sessions are set for May 9, 0000 – 0100 UTC (Wednesday evening, May 8, in continental US time zones) and May 14, 0000 – 0100 UTC (Monday evening, May 13, in continental US time zones). These events will follow ARRL RTTY Roundup rules. Everyone works everyone. Use a dial frequency of 7.090 MHz (moving higher in 2 kHz increments to avoid manmade interference). Participants must use WSJT-X version 2.1.0-rc5, which is a beta — or “release candidate” — version that contains the FT4 protocol. Installation packages for Windows and Linux are on the WSJT-X page. A full release of WSJT-X version 2.1 is targeted for release in July 2019.
Although still in a beta version that will expire automatically on June 7, the WSJT-Xprogram suite containing FT4 has proved to be popular, and the two operating events are an effort to wring out any additional program anomalies and issues.
“The scheduled practice sessions are intended to provide shakedown and exercising of the FT4 protocol, the software’s user interface, etc., under something approaching contest-like conditions,” Joe Taylor, K1JT, of the WSJT-X Development Group told ARRL. “We’re looking for feedback on what works well, what does not, and what an FT4-enabled contest might be like.”
Those planning to take part in the FT4 operating events are urged to read The FT4 Protocol for Digital Contesting beforehand. Some set-up will be required.
1) On the Settings | Advanced tab, check the Special operating activity and ARRL RTTY Roundup options. In the field labeled “Exch,” enter the two- or three-letter abbreviation for your state or province (US/Canadian stations) or DX if you are outside the US or Canada.
2) Make sure that 7.090 appears in your dropdown frequency list for FT4 mode. Navigate to File | Settings | Frequencies, right-click on the frequencies table, select Insert, then IARU Region = All, Mode = FT4, and enter Frequency = 7.090.
3) Go to File | Open log directory and rename your ADIF log wsjt_log.adi to something like wsjtx_log.adi.bak, in order to start the mock contest with an empty log. Also select File | Reset Cabrillo log. Restore your original ADIF log after the mock contest(s).
4) Go to File | Reporting and check Log automatically (contesting only) and Clear DX call and grid after logging.
5) Go to File | Settings | Colors and check these boxes (reading top to bottom):
  • My call in message
  • New DXCC
  • New Call on Band
  • CQ in message
  • Transmitted message
6) Do not use a compound or non-standard call sign in this event.
Post your observations and comments to the Yahoo WSJT Group reflector, the WSJT Development Group Mailing List, or the RTTYDigital list.
“To all of the developers and beta testers involved: great job, guys!” said Rory Bowers, K5CKS, on the Yahoo WSJT Group reflector. “FT4 is a masterpiece and promises to be very well enjoyed by DXers everywhere. I think you have exceeded our wildest expectations. I am looking forward to the final release of 2.1!”
Reported Bugs in WSJT-X version 2.1.0-rc5
The WSJT-X Development Group reports that it’s aware of these bugs or anomalies in release candidate 5 of WSJT-X version 2.1.0, no further feedback on any of these issues is necessary.
1) The 64-bit executable for Windows resets the audio input gain to 100% on program startup, when the input audio device is changed, and when switching to a new configuration. A temporary workaround is to, if necessary, reset the Windows audio input to the desired level.
2) WSJT-X version 2.1.0-rc5 does not run correctly under macOS using the current build.
3) Any use of the Settings screen will mistakenly set your operating mode to FT8 when you exit Settings by clicking OK. A temporary workaround is to reselect FT4 from the Mode menu.
4) You may occasionally experience a program crash with the message, “Subprocess error: Subprocess failed with exit code 2,” followed by details that include, “At line 41 of file C:\Users\bill\src\k1jt\wsjtx\lib\ft4\ft4_downsample.f90.” The temporary workaround is to restart the program.
5) If you have configured WSPR mode to use band-hopping, the program may arbitrarily change your band setting in FT4 mode. The temporary workaround is to turn off band-hopping in WSPR mode.
6) Positions of the “OK” and “Cancel” buttons on the Log QSO window move around, seemingly at random. This is intended behavior. Obviously there are some disadvantages, and it may not become permanent.
Some discussion has also involved the choice of 7.047 MHz as the 40-meter FT4 frequency. The frequency is quite close to the W1AW bulletin and code practice frequency, 7.047.5 MHz. It appears that the selection of 7.047 MHz was a late change because of objections to the initial choice. 7.047 MHz is also CW territory, according to the ARRL Band Plan for 40 meters.
