“Jarrad VK3BL reviews Palstar’s AT2KD and
talks about the advantages of having a large, high powered tuner even if
you only run barefoot. Additionally, Jarrad demonstrates on multiple
bands how to find a match for your antenna, even if you have never tuned
that antenna before or have any reference points to start from. We hope
you enjoy the review of Palstar, the overview of antenna tuner
principles, and the full demonstration of how to find a match from
scratch! 73, Jarrad VK3BL 🙂 ”
The Palstar AT2KD antenna
tuner covers 6 to 160 Meters with a power rating of up to 2000 watts
PEP and is identical in all respects to the AT2K except instead of three
controls, the tuner features just two to tune your antenna.
The
AT2KD matches dipoles, center fed doublets, Verticals, end-fed wire,
delta loops, beams, Windoms, Inverted V’s and an optional external 4:1
or 1:1 current balun for balanced wire feeders can be purchased during
check-out.

Surprise!
A strong (G3) geomagnetic storm is currently in progress thanks to an
enhanced solar wind stream containing a sharply south pointing Bz.
Visible aurora is likely at middle to high latitudes if it is still dark
outside.
ALERT: Geomagnetic K-index of 7
Threshold Reached: 2019 May 14 0859 UTC
Synoptic Period: 0600-0900 UTC
Active Warning: Yes
NOAA Scale: G3 – Strong
Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents – Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices.
Spacecraft
– Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low
Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur.
Navigation – Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur.
Radio – HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent.
Aurora – Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.

Something
new (to me) caught my eye this morning and brought an exclamation to my
lips: the three-day geomagnetic forecast for today shows Purple!! This
indicates some serious geomagnetic activity! Red is not uncommon, but
Purple really got my attention!
The disturbance is due to an
active sunspot area 31 times the size of earth! There are 3-4 CMEs
(Coronal Mass Ejections) headed our way, arriving in the next day or
two, which will likely make SWLing a bit difficult, if not causing at
least momentary blackouts in some places.
On the upside, for
those amateur radio folks who like working Auroral Skip, conditions are
likely to be quite interesting in the VHF and above ranges.
SolarHam.net and SpaceweatherLive.com are both excellent sites to study solar activity, so give them a visit! 73, Robert K4PKM
Robert
Gulley, K4PKM (formerly AK3Q), is the author of this post and a regular
contributor to the SWLing Post. Robert also blogs at All Things
Radio.

ARRL
is now accepting applications from individuals interested in becoming
part of the new Volunteer Monitor program, a joint undertaking of ARRL
and the FCC. The program seeks volunteers who — working under the
direction of ARRL — will monitor and survey the Amateur Radio bands both
to detect improper activity and to recognize exemplary on-the-air
behavior.
Prospective Volunteer Monitors must be ARRL members.
They will undergo a training and certification program administered by
ARRL, and will be vetted by ARRL through at least one oral interview and
a preliminary evaluation by ARRL staff. Such requirements will continue
for Volunteer Monitors once they are selected.
Volunteer
Monitors will serve 3-year terms at the pleasure of ARRL, and ARRL will
reserve the right to terminate the participation of any Volunteer
Monitor for any reason.
Volunteer Monitors must be able to
utilize state-of-the-art receiving equipment and to access no-cost
remote receive sites, if requested. Applicants must possess strong
writing and communication skills and an understanding of the importance
of thorough documentation. They must have basic word processing and data
entry skills and be able to send such information, including
recordings, to ARRL electronically.
Applicants must have no
history of warning letters or other enforcement-related action from the
FCC, must hold a Technician or higher license class, and must have been
licensed for at least 3 years.
Applicants should send a copy
their applications to their Section Manager (see page 16 in any recent
issue of QST for a complete list of Section Managers and their contact
information).
In February, Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH, was named
to oversee the development and implementation phases of the Volunteer
Monitor program, which will replace the Official Observers (OO) program.
Hollingsworth once handled Amateur Radio enforcement for the FCC.

This
year’s second Kidsday will be held on Saturday 15th of June. This event
is especially created to promote Amateur Radio to youth. This is a
moment where you can share your amateur radio hobby with your family,
grandkids, friends, scouts or even to the general public. This day can
be the first time for youth to experience a real radio QSO, hopefully
they get interested in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator.
You
could make use of this suggested exchange: Name, age, location and
favourite colour. Be sure to work the same station again if an operator
has changed. To draw attention, call “CQ Kids Day.”
Suggested frequencies IARU R1:
10 Meters: 28.350 to 28.400 MHz
15 Meters: 21.360 to 21.400 MHz
20 Meters: 14.270 to 14.300 MHz
40 Meters: 7.080 to 7.120 MHz
80 Meters: 3.650 to 3.750 MHz
Other suggested frequencies by ARRL:
12 Meters: 24.960 to 24.980 MHz
17 Meters: 18.140 to 18.145 MHz
40 Meters: 7.270 to 7.290 MHz
80 Meters: 3.740 to 3.940 MHz

This
unseasonably wet and chilly May has me yearning and pining for Summer.
It’s hard for me to believe that the Memorial Day Weekend holiday is
less than two weeks away. It seems like I’ll be grilling hot dogs and
hamburgers with a sweater and cap on! All joking aside, the hot weather
will be here before you know it and Summer will go by in the blink of an
eye.
Keep in the back of your collective minds that the EIGHTH
Annual NJQRP Skeeter Hunt will be taking place on Sunday, August 18th.
As usual, sign ups for Skeeter Numbers will be accepted as of the First
Day of Summer, Friday June 21st. Please! NO REQUESTS before then! I’m
sorry to do it; but early requests will be ignored. I want everyone to
have a shot at a low number - for some reason, they seem to be coveted.
This
year’s requirement for the Points Bonus will actually be quite simple,
but will take some thinking and ingenuity on your part. To get the 100
Bonus Points for 2019, all you have to do is ……..
display
either one of these images somewhere at your operating position and
submit a photo with your log summary. Simple - right? The most
ingenious or unique way of working the logo into the station photo will
get a special prize (in addition to the bonus points) - what that is, I
have not determined yet. But it will be something special, I promise.
So
hopefully, if someone asks you what the heck it is that your doing, you
can point to the logo and “splain” to them that you’re huntin’
skeeters.
